Does anyone dose K+

orthokardia

New member
I have been doing research on my lack of red in the tank. It looks like a potassium deficiency is a likely culprit. Before I start dosing I need a good test kit to see if I am actually low. All other colors are great and I am running reeflux 10k's and use coralife salt. If you are a K+ doser I would love a test kit recommendation and to know what K+ brand you use.

thx

OK, I used to dose potassium but lately it has been holding its own. It is also good for montis that tend to look a bit bleached when K is too low. I used the Zeo test kit but it really is quite hard to read and takes practice. I believe another German company used to make one but not sure if it is still available.

For supplements, I used NOW Potassium Chloride, $3.50 a bottle, found here:

It works well and is sufficiently pure to not cause problems. I forgot the conversion from teaspoons/grams to raise X gallons Y ppm but could easily calculate it again if you're interested.

thanks, dave. i saw elos has a test, but it is $30 and i have never talked to anyone who has used one of their kits.

I can't find the ones some Zeoheads told me was easier to use so it must be discontinued. The one I use is actually Korallen-Zucht. Go to the zeovit forum and ask over there about the Elos kit; I guarantee someone over there has first-hand experience.

Quote from a guy in NC:

Hi
I received the Elos Potassium test kit today. It is very easy to use and easy to read. You look down through the vial at a black dot, you add your prepared sample to the vial drop by drop and when you can no longer see the black dot, you compare the level of fluid in the vial against a line level chart to see your potassium level.

Sounds good to me -- same method as the German kit but a much better way to implement the interpretation of the result.

Elos are good test kits, I double check my Salifert with Elos every now and then, KH in particular never used their Potassium test

I use
TROPIC MARIN PRO-CORAL A- ELEMENTS
TROPIC MARIN PRO-CORAL K+ ELEMENTS

and I don't really test it... I just add some when I change water.

Zeo I have used and Elos will be the next I'm going to use. I dose with brightwells and Kent right now. just becuse I won them at a raffle.

I only dose half of they call for once aweek. And water change every Sunday morning. I use tropic Marian salt which is high in potassium.

Thats Hydnopora on that rock, and yes it can sting the tar out of anything, but my hydnopora have never had long stingers.

Unplugged the reactor and replaced the old test kit:)

below is a pic from the 19th. it looks funny as it is top down with some waves, but you can see no bleeching.

I dose a little K+ due to running Zeo (6 weeks in). The KZ test kit is very hard to read.

Caps show the 1st and most positive response to the dosing. I never had PE on them enough to see them flowing in the "breeze".. now I can.

+1 on 12dKH being on the high side.
