Does anyone feed their anthias capelin roe?

I'm curious as to where you found roe that wasn't dyed orange and seasoned? I've only been able to find capelin roe at asian markets but it has already been dyed.

I'm sure you've given it a whirl, but I've found that many of my fish really went for Nutramar Ova.

It's very tough to find undyed/unseasoned capelin roe in small quantities. I've been looking for 3 years or so and only found it once, but check an Asian food store (or see my post above). The only consistent source I've found sells it by the 50 pound flat...

Several aquarium food makers have told me they'll be coming out with a fish egg product "soon", but it never seems to pan out. I really don't understand it because these seem like they'd be a surefire seller, and somebody, somewhere, is harvesting and selling them raw to make the sushi condiment.

I was originally given a small jar of the roe by my LFS. My anthias love it so I am trying to (unsuccessfully so far) find more of it. I have nutramar but have not yet tried that with this particular tank.

On a side note, I was a bit confused about these shrimp. Regular "jumbo" shrimp from the grocery store... they were labeled freshwater. Is this normal? I asked the butcher, and he said yes, all the shrimp they sell are freshwater. Really?

Yep, they're freshwater.............no worries, I've been feeding it to my fish for 20 years & they live long & healthy lives:lol2:

Snorvich, when the weather gets colder, go to your local fish market and ask if they have cleaned any mackerel with roe - I used to work in a fish market and so one winter brought home a ziploc full of mackerel roe and have been feeding that to my tank ever since. Each large femle will have a good sized pack of roe the size of your thumb.

The eggs are small - about 0.5mm or less and freeze well. Everything in the tank goes nuts for it - the fish, the inverts, the LPS, even the SPS respond to feeding the roe.

Other fish you can try are whiting (or English whiting in the States) but the egg sacs are much smaller, herring or any of hake/pollock/cod provided you can find them.

BTW, I prepared them by using chopsticks to break open the membranes holding the eggs together into a egg sac, then blended them up to make a "single-egg suspension", which I then froze in a flattened ziploc. Now I just break a small chunk off and just plop it into the tank.

Terrific. Thanks ever so much, that is a GREAT suggestion. All should be high in HUFA which is what I am looking for. (of course I will do black worms occasionally as well)

I make a bunch of finely chopped shrimp/clam/scallop with a cheese grater on the frozen meat--very quick and efficient. Then I rinse the mush in a baby brine shrimp net and feed out...

I feed clams in the shell (every angel and butterfly likes that) but I will start with grated shrimp. Excellent idea!

I tried some capelin roe today. It got an excellent feeding response from my whole tank. All of my fishes ate some- even my tailspot blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura) which will usually only go for very small particle sized foods like cyclopeeze. I think I will try to incorporate the roe into my regular feedings. Other fishes that ate it included; my spotted mandarin (Synchiropus picturatus), trio of cardinals (Apogon cyanosoma), my male lyretail anthias (P. squamipinnis) and my Swallowtail angel (Genicanthus melanospilus).

Yes, all of my fish eat it as well. A good source of HUFA. I just got black worms, I will report back how that works out.

I get fish roe from the asian market to put in my food mix. I forget what species it is, but its orange. After rinsing, and refreezing they are white though.

Where did you buy the roe at? I live near Salinas btw.
