Does anyone have an mp20 in a small tank I can look at?

I'm thinking about picking up an mp20 while all the sales are going on this week, but would like to view one in operation if possible before I buy it.

I'm trying to choose between the Vortech mp20 or the Tunze 6055 & controller.

Thanks.

Dan Has one set up on the top tanks by the Hard Goods.
I'm not impressed with it. My Brother in law has a 20 on his 90.
I have a 6055 with Single controller on my 29, and it's WAY more powerfull.
HTH!

I have a couple of mp40w's. I can throw one on my 34g if you want to see what it can do. (the only difference should be the wireless capability, which we won't be using)

Thanks for the response... I was just a little concerned if the Tunze flow would be able to hit all the areas in my tank. It will be replacing to 6025 in the back right corner of the tank.

The reason I was considering the mp20, is that I've heard they'll move water the whole way on the other side of the tank, and also the ramping up and down flow modes they have.

I'm just not sure which way I should go since I can really only stick the powerhead in one of the 2 back corners. Also, I would like to only purchase one, and not have to get 2 to do the job.

I may take you up on that offer, were you going to be around tonight?

Yes TJ, I'm here tonight.

The video thread says that the vortech would work better in a cube.

I have two on my 75 and they are turned WAY down. I love the flow and the reefcrest mode. I can't see why you'd need two. Call me if you want to stop by.

You Can't compare the 40's you have with the 20.
Go Look at a 20 and make up your mind, or if you want the Vortech, buy the 40 right off the bat.
Looking at the 40's won't tell you anything. My friend Pat runs just a Single 6055 on a 92 gal Bow, and it works great.
The 20 on the 90 SPS tank my Brother runs gets wiped up with the Sureflow modded Maxi, as well as a Hydor #4.
Just trying to save you some $$$$$$.
Go to Salty Critter and look at what you want a 20, not a 40.

The mp40 would be WAY too much flow for my cube. I'm going to try and stop by Mike's tonight to take a look at his mp20.

Sagi, shoot me a PM with your addy & phone number... since I'm going to be up that way I could meet you or swing by with the 75 and to check out your setup.

I'm not sure I agree wolf. The 20 can be upgraded to the 40 with the addition of a wireless controller, it will
a. make it wireless,
b. add flow
(according to their site)

We can put the 40 in my 34 gallon and limit the flow to give tj an idea of where the flow goes.

either way, better look at the 20 since you can.

Don't agree with what? The Tunze 6055 will out flow the Mp20.
Period. (IMO).
You saw the Vids, what looks like it has more flow to you? That said, Use whatever you think will be best for your tank. That's the great thing about Reefing, no one way to do anything.

I don't think he's looking for maximum water movement, but rather the pump that is appropriate to his tank size. :)

I have the MP20 on a 30x18x12 and its probably just the thing you're looking for.

Ok I saw both the mp20 and mp40 in action tonight...

The mp40 was in a Red Sea Max tank

The mp20 was in a 40 breeder

In both instances we moved the pump so it resembled a situation closest to my tank.

I think the mp20 would be good for my size tank if I was operating in any mode other than short pulse pumping a wave. IMO the mp20 just doesn't throttle up enough to get the job done. We had the RedSea Max rocking with the mp40 though!

Also, I was really surprised with the level of control on both powerheads, how easy the pump is to operate, and how easy it was to dial in the wave with the mp40.

That being said, I was very impressed with both units, and neither put out any audible noise at the rates I was cranking them. Also, I was extremely impressed with the massive undertoe these things create. There really was no area in the tanks not receiving some type of flow.

I think I'm going to go with the mp40 though... better to be safe than sorry, and I can always dial it down if it proves to be too much.

Thanks Mike and Sagi!

you're welcome TJ. Thanks for driving the sump out here.
Sorry that I was WAY OFF about the mp40 working for you.....oh wait, I wasn't, lol.

All I know is, I go upstairs, come back down, and TJ has a wave going in my red sea max. Looked sweet. The amount of @#$% that came off my rocks made me realize how poor my current flow is.....

THANKS A LOT!!!

Haha... that should be a testament to how easy those things are to use. I had never touched a VorTech before that, and it took me all of 5 minutes to get it going.

That wave we had going in the Red Sea Max is what sold me on the 40.

I bet your clownfish are happy that rollercoaster ride is over though!

The MP20 didn't cut it? Going with the 40?
Told you the 20 was weak, and that you should go with the 40 if you were going with a Vortech.
Happy T'Day!

Vortech pics... I was rocking a wave, which also rocked the stand

So I'll be holding off on the wave until the new stand is built, and I have it in ReefCrest mode right now. Probably about 75% power. These things are awesome though, and move water everywhere in the tank... not to mention it takes up so little room.

I had some noise issues initially, but after toying with the alignment of the wet & dry side it quieted down considerably. I'm getting a little noise right now when the pump reaches the max speed I have it set too, but you can't hear it unless you're right in front of the tank. It's a little difficult to get it lined up properly with the black acrylic back panel, so I'll play with it some more tomorrow.
