Does anyone not use a cover on their tank?

I hate to pick on Ssteve and Supra400hptt, but those were predictable jumpers and gets to heart of the debate of reef keeping vs responsible reef keeping when the aesthetics of the aquarium out way how we care for the inhabitants.

I'm not worried about you picking on me. My decisions are mine and they are what they are, and it's no big deal to me, so hopefully no ones offended by them, but if so that's unfortunate for them.

No cover for me, I do have a canopy though. Also I have a few wrasse, none of which have jumped. Can't say the same about my carpenter..... RIP

Your decisions are yours but you freely expressed them and they received a response. Nothing here is going to ruin my day, but I do find it bothersome that you put fish that are known to be jumpers into an aquarium without a top and then follow it up later with "... and it's no big deal to me". To me this disregard epitomizes irresponsibilty in this hobby.

In my earlier comment I referred to "rimless" aquariums when I should have said "uncovered" aquariums since some, like cakeman, with rimless tanks do have them covered.

I was thinking about sitting two 24 inch long pieces of thin acrylic on the inside rim of my 48 inch 55 gallon, as a top. If I have a couple holes in the acrylic so I can lift it off the top, will it affect o2 exchange?

Not only will it affect O2, it will warp/sag and be useless before your next water change!

Hmm thanks for the advice. What if it were glass?

Less warp, easy to break, heavy. Should be tempered.

What's wrong with using the BRS 1/4 inch screen and a screen kit from either BRS or local hardware store? Doesn't interfere with light, O2 exchange or get covered with salt schmutz. Cheap and light too.

I run my 65 with no top....

Last night my hydras went into a thunder storm around 1 or so...

This morning my Lubbock wrasse nowhere to be seen, and my cat looked pretty happy all day

Circle of life

I've had a green mandarin and a bicolour blenny jump out of my rimless tank, I should have see the bi colour one coming though, he stoped hang out in the rocks and started sleeping in the top corner of the tank.

The mandarin I was able to save, came down stairs in the middle of the night to get a drink if water and as always check the tank, and there he was still wet, must have just happened.

After those two carpet surfers my wife said its probly some bad crabs pinching sleeping tails in the middle of the night, so we pulled every rock out of the tank (tank was only 6months old and only two corals in it)

We found 13 hair crabs the size of a 5cent piece, two pistol shrimp and two mantis shrimp, haven't had a jumper since.

Interesting, but that is not the only 'possible' reason for fish jumping.
IMO/E if you have fish, you need a cover!

True, I will get a screen top, I plan to put some ventralis anthias in so I don't want to lose those baby's.

I have a 75 but no cover. Love the look but I do have the BRS 1/4'' netting I'm going to make the screen cover.

I've never had a cover on any of my reef tanks. Over all the years I've had but one jumper, a purple pseudochromis. I don't keep wrasses basslets(any more) or any other cigar shaped fish which might explain my experience.
