Does Chaeto ever give off a slimy snot substance?

On my 75, I don't have a refugium. I was keeping a ball of Chaeto in the DT and never had a problem. Till Saturday. I got a bunch of slimy snot stuff that looked like it was coming from the Chaeto, but I'm not sure if it was from somewhere else and just got stuck in it.

My micron filter sock was overflowing and snotty, and my skimmer went nuts and overflowed this snotty mess.

Anybody have this happen??

sounds like dinoflagellate. Boost your PH with kalkwasser and run some fresh carbon. If it is dinos do not do any water changes as the trace elements in the fresh seawater is giving it more fuel to use.

I think it was really something with the Chaeto. I took it out and left the sock out of the sump till Sunday night. So far, no more snot.

BTW, where's the "knock on wood" smilie??

The slime is back. No chaeto involved so it wasn't the culprit. I have vermatids in all my tanks but they have never done this.

I'll second the dinoflagellate/cyanobacteria guess. Not all cyano looks like the red/black blooms on sand we're so used too. There is a very good example of this in the forum right now actually.

Have you had any tank events that would cause nutrient levels to fluctuate and spark a microalgae bloom?
