Does Garlic help ich

I was told that liquid Garlic may help, put it in the tank and put on the food. Anyone try this. And lowering the salinity as low as possible .

The lowering your salinity does help. I don't believe that there is any solid, scientific evidence that Garlic does anything to combat cryptocaryon infections.

I would recommend the standard quarantine tank with conventional medicine.

You are correct.
There are only a few confirmed methods for treating Ich, and garlic isn't one of them.
Please read WaterKeeper's sticky at the top of this forum about some of the proper methods for treating Ich: Have ICH looky here!!!!!

I believe garlic only strengthens the fishes immune system and appetite. It wont, "cure" ich, but Im pretty sure it give the fish a boost to the immune system which MAY help. Ideally this should be used as a suppliment to prevent ich, instead of treat it.

I've used the juice from garlic for many years for my freshwater tanks, soaking pellets, flakes, frozen foods never had a ick breakout in 5 years, I've been running my reef tank now for about 5 months also soaking foods in garlic juice not a trace of ick, if it works for you do it..

Soaking food in garlic is like vitamin C. Nothing proven, not a treatment, but seems to be a great preventative measure. I soak all my food.

Dont do anything to your main tank as it will harm everything in there except the fish. Leave the main tank alone, take the fish in to quarantine(hospital tank), and treat that wether it be hyposalinity or copper. Leave your main tank fallow/fishless for a month atleast while the occupants are in quarantine.

well I recently lost an entire tank to Ich and all of my fish ate food soaked in fresh sqeeezed garlic juice....so I dont think it really did much :(

Does vitamin C cure the common cold?

The answer to your question is about the same. People popularly believe that it does, but the great majority of the evidence is either circumstantial or relies on the illogical argument that "I took vitamin C and I didn't catch a cold; therefore that proves that vitamin C helps fight the common cold."

I don't buy into it, and until I see some logical and factual evidence to the contrary then I still won't buy into it. Garlic isn't a solution for improper quarantine - which is the best way to deal with ich before it becomes an epidemic in your aquarium. Quarantine all of your animals for at least 4-6 weeks before introducing them to the main display, and properly treat any infected animals with PROVEN methods.

Wow... I guess that's what I get when I write a post and then forget to hit submit for over an hour. Lol...

I have personally tried this, both soaking food in garlic and adding Brightwell Aquatics Garlic formula to food. Neither one cured my fish of ich; in fact, all fish eventually died. The only thing that has worked for me over the years is getting the fish out of the tank and into a hospital tank, and then treating the fish appropriately, either with a copper formulation or hyposalinity (my preference is copper when the fish is up to it).

They all say myth, but it worked for me in reversing the disease on a tang in a 185 reef that could not be caught without great damage to the tank. Used Garlic Guard daily in the tank and in it's food. Saw improvement in day's and completly gone in weeks. But there is no proof, or is there?

Again in my opinion, garlic is a vaccine or a premedative, not a cure. If you HAVE ich, dont count on garlic to relieve you of the infection. Treat the disease (parasite) accordingly (copper or hypo). [I ran in to the same problem months ago with a sick fish, increased my feedings (with garlic as usual) with no result. Treated the sick fish with coper, and looks to be cured. The other non infected fish are ok-thanks to garlic or not cant be proven)

I agree with all the pros and cons above, but IMHO, dosing garlig 24/7 is not a bad idea.

GL with the sick ones.

Wow, that's amazing that the ich disappeared just like it does in it's normal life cycle ;)
That was exactly my first thought when reading the reefland link above.
One poster was amazed that after using garlic for a couple of days all the Ich disappeared from the fish.
Obviously that person didn't know that Ich only feeds on the fish for a few days and then drops off naturally on it's own to begin the next phase of it's lifecycle.

They could have danced in a circle and spit 3 times on the floor and the result would have been the same, doesn't mean it helped or is a cure.
Unless there is a documented scientific study proving garlic does anything to affect or treat Ich I'm going to have to keep it filed under "often repeated folklore".

Numerous people are amazed by it and then spread it as a cure, which it isn't. Then others see this "cure" and follow it as gospel. If they would study the actual FACTS about ich and the only proven cures, they would realize that garlic is a total myth at this point in time.
This is why it's so frustrating to try to help people when so much misinformation is being spread as actual fact.

Ok say what you will, but I started using Kent Garlic Extreme, 24 hours ago and NO rubbing and less spots. The people at Fosters and Smith recommend it. And that's the place I purchased the 3 Tangs all with ich.

Well of course they recommend it, they made a sale. Good for you! We will try to teach you about ich but if you don't want to learn then why did you start a thread asking for help?
