Does GFO compete

Hi RC.
I'm trying to control some cyano in the tank
I don't know if this is true or not but I understand that reducing phosphate will help get rid of cyano.
If I run Phosban and put cheato in the sump at the same time, will the GFO out consume the cheato for phosphate nutrients causing the cheato to die off?
Also, how do I know if this purple on the rock is not coraline instead of cyano.

cyano is slippery/slimy.. coraline is hard and won't brush off..

I don't believe that running GFO will really do anything for cyano..
lights out... red slime remover... manual siphoning,etc.. is how to handle it..

Of course I also believe cyano is serving a useful purpose and not really a bad thing unless it gets bad enough that its blanketing stuff..

Coraline is hard and adheres to the rock completely while cyano is slimy and can physically be blown off the rock with a turkey baster. If you aren't sure, blast it with a turkey baster and you'll see what Im saying.

GFO will "compete" with macroalgae for phosphate but i wouldn't worry about that just yet. Run GFO and just make sure you don't see any change in your chaeto. If it begins to turn white, it's dying and you'll need to remove the GFO probably.

IME, cyano is really strange. It can be impacted by diminishing phosphate but it can also flourish even in very low nutrient tanks. I've ceased feeding altogether for a week while doing nothing but WCs and heavy skimming and still had cyano. At that point, I used Red Slime Remover in conjunction with a 2 day blackout and that neutralized the problem completely. My SPS coral couldn't have cared less about the blackout either just FYI.

People run chaeto and gfo simultaneously.

It might be worth testing for phosphate if you haven't done so.

Cyan can be syphoned, blown, or brushed off, and it's slimy. Coralline is the opposite.
