Does your candy cane go through periods of receeding?

Crush Coral

My candy cane is shrunk back into itself. Has been that way for about a week now. Does not hunt at night either. I have seen it do this in the past too and am wondering if this is normal?

I've had mine for about eight months now, and never had anything that lasted a week. A couple of times a few of the heads would "shrink" back, but that never lasted more than a day. It could be that yours is older and experiencing something I have not faced yet. As long as your parameters are OK, and the coral returns to form I would think you are OK.

May want to check to see if it's bothered by flow, or some critters crawling on it.

I had some for 4 years, and I noticed they always recessed about this time in summer. My temp was always consistent, so that wasn't it. pH was usually a bit different due to the A/C running, but it was never a huge swing. Since the recession always happened this time of year (and never to any of my other corals), I just always attributed it to some sort of external environmental factor.

So when you say you've seen it happen in the past, do you mean like the past month, or more like a seasonal thing like I mentioned? If it's not a seasonal thing, you may want to track its condition and correlate it to your tank maintenance. Maybe the coral doesn't like your water changes or reacts badly to GFO changes.

I'm with Frankfish on this one, check to see if you've got too much flow on them.

Another thing you might do is try to feed it. Squirt some small brine shrimp by one of the mouths & wait a few minutes for more feeder tentacles to come out..then try to keep your shrimp if you have any, away til it can swallow it.

Good Luck, hope they perk back up!!
