Dog ate coral

My 75 lbs. 2 yr old lab ate about 10-20 pieces of Briareum asbestinum sometime late last night and has been having a short breathing attack followed by vomiting clear flem. This happens about every 30 mins for most of the day. She is eatting and drinking her normal amounts of food and water. Of course, it's Sunday and the vet is closed. Is there anything I can do to help her until I can take her in tomorrow? Thanks in advance.

Wow, what a strange appetite. Sorry to hear that.

Well, that's hard to say, and I'd hate to be responsible for making things worse. Dogs are pretty prone to vomiting, but the breathing is a concern. Some toxins can be bound to activated carbon, and it is generally fairly nontoxic and even is used in people, so perhaps mixing that in the next batch of food may help.

Maybe a "breathing attack" was the wrong thing to say. She is taking several deep breaths before vomiting, maybe like a coughing spell, followed by a "gag". I didn't know if maybe something a simple as bread would help. Probably not too many cases of coral poisoning around. Thanks Randy.

Not sure what toxin(S) are in Briareum. 2 tablespoons of pepto - bismal every four hours should help. If she is acting normal except for the vomiting - i would not get overly worried. Just have her checked out in the morning. It is likely the breathing problem is due to the nausia just before the vomiting.

PS - will try to check on Briareum toxicity and will check back if I find anything

DO NOT GIVE PEPTO pepto and like medications do get rid of the vometing, but forces the toxin (if any) to be retained in the body. This bit of knowlege comes from a week spent in the hospital with my 2 year old daughter.for a simple virus

I am not a Dr. or a Vet but I would not give pepto .

i am concerned about people giving advice here. I am a vet, and people should not give advice in areas that they are not "experts". i have great respect for people who voolunter their time to help others here. this person with the dog should contact there local vet or emergency clinic soon. i am not sure what the dog consumed. is this a hard coral or something? it could be a chemical burn that is causing sore throat symptoms. the dog could also have a gastritis problem due to meal. pepto is not good for dogs and cats.

i am not trying to be black cloud here, but giving medical advice could get someone in hot water if an animal dies. from experience, people emotions run high when fluffy dies or gets ill. legal action can be taken in some situations. so be careful.

i just found info on the net about this coral or whatever it is. it does cause breathing problems and progressive neurologic symptoms. the dog on the site i found was euthanized because the breathing muscles were paralized. i would go to the vet emmediatly. please let me know how your dog is doing!!! good luck!

Thanks everyone for your concern. Took Lady in this morning after a long night. Seems since the coral wasn't live it has no toxins that can hurt a dog. She has a case of Kennel Cough and should be much better in a couple days. Sheeeeew.
