Doing a little study

rogergolf66

im an addict lol
Can u post the parameters u maintain in ur sps tanks

Ph,cal,alk, po4 and nitrates

Also just a quick 1 word on growth and 1 word on color. Great, good, fair, type of response.

Thanks

Roger

pH = 8.2
Calcium = 460 (higher than normal = 440 due to recent doser issues...)
Alk = 8
PO4 = 0 (no hanna checker...)
Nitrates = undetectable

Growth = good
color = good

P.H.= 8.4-8.5 (Can't seem to lower it)
Calcium = 440
Alk = 8.3 DKH
PO4 = 0
Nitrates = under 5-10ppm.

Growth Is good, Colors are fair

65g
pH- 8.1-8.4
Cal-420
Alk-9.5
PO4-untraceable
nitrate-under 2ppm
Growth is exploding since I increase alk. Colors are brightening up.

Very curious about ur ph with those numbers. What's ph day night swing. Do u have a ph probe monitoring?

Yes I have a full apex monitoring and my ph is 7.9 at night and 8.2-8.3 during the day. I keep my tank right where natural see water is. I'm also running full zeovit so it's Important for me to have my levels his way.

120 tank
8.05 - 8.24 Neptune
Alk 10.0 Hanna
Cal 440
Mag 1360
phosphate 0.00 Hanna
Nitrate 5 to 10 ppm (making changes to lower them again)

Like poster above, better growth with more alk and higher pH

PH follows KH ...

and we also need to know if good is better than great, and where "amazing" fits in ! is it good then great then amazing ?

now what does amazing growth mean ? 1 inch in a week on Stags ? 1 inch in a month in millies ? or thick branched SPS ?

same goes for color .... surveys like this simply will not work, unless we get RAW pics from all tanks, and only 1 person doing white balance on all pics,[so they are all done on the same grade so we can compare !]

I keep mine at NSW ... KH at7
CA++ at 415
mg around 1200
K+ 380
no n and p.

growth and color, can always be better .... and I use Zeovit ! I would LOVE to see pics of the SPS others are calling AMAZing with great colors and so on.

Yes ph follows KH. As far as rating fair, good, great, amazing would be the order. This is opinion for sure. That being said sps keepers r normally at a bit of a higher level in tank knowledge so I hope they have seen enough other tanks and growth and color have an idea where they stand.

This is not a scientific study and I would need a lot more info and pic documenting changes and be able to measure size of corals and so on.

I understand that but I don't have enough money to fly to everyone's house so this is my next best option :)

Thanks to everyone for participation please keep them coming.

pH 8.4
kH 10.2
Ca 420
nitrate: 0 (unmeasurable)
PO4: 0.02

My growth is not too great right now. My color isn't either. I'm switching stuff up to lower my kH. I was told to keep it high if I wanted good growth with my sps, but it seems that I should only be doing that in a system that is not ULNS. Still learning.

What is U L n S mean? Not to change the subject But with a PH that hi I would keep your alkalinity Closer to 7 and very stable try not to let it swing. also when you lower it do it slowly

Ph 8.1 to 8.35,diurnal swing
KH 9.3
Calcium 450ppm to 470ppm
PO4,<03ppm consistently,often .01ppm.
NO3 <0.2

growth: good

color: excellent,good++ ;many favorable comments on it; hard to quantify, it's subjective. Look here and judge for yourself:

November Tank of the Month

Not to go beyond the survey question but to clarify given other statements; to get lower ph you an enocurage more gas exchange via surface agitation to ensure the water has enough CO2 relative to the air around it. That works in the other direction too.

Ph and alkalinity are related but ph does not follow ph. Ph depends on CO2 levels in the water and consequent H+ levels from hydrolized carbonic acid which produces and extra H proton. Alkalinity does not since the carbonic acid also produces one unit of alkalinty .

Tom,
since we are talking about SPS tanks, they all have great flow [or the corals wont live] so I would have to say low PH means too much co2 in room air, and other way around for high ...

http://www.hamzasreef.com/Contents/Calculators/EquilibriumPh.php
good calcualtor for equilibrium PH, as you see, its dependant on KH and co2 levels.

I have this problem ! small condo, too many tanks, so my PH is always on the lower side, 7.8 in AM to 8.2 at night ! CO2 is about 1200 PPM + in my living room, and 1500 PPM + at night since I smoke ... :S

in winter I can leave windows opened, which helps the PH.

sure a good ventilation system would go a long way, or a co2 scrubber.

what are you guys using to test your pH? All digital? I hardly test my pH. My tank is in a large room that seems pretty ventilated. I run the lights on my fuge opposite my DT lights. As long as I keep my alk stable, my pH doesn't change much. I would know more with a pH meter on my reef keeper though. Should I spend the money to get one, just to find out my shifts in pH?
