Dosing Magnesium

I have been dosing the 2 part solution faithfully for the past months into my 75 gallon reef(Bulkreefsupply). I have only been adding Calc and Alk as prescribed by Randy.

While I know the protocol is to add the Magnesium once the other two gallon jugs are fully depleted, I am just wondering if some of you "dare" to add Mag prior to using up the two Calc and AlC gallon jugs. My Mag runs around 1200 without supplementing.
I just cant envision adding the entire gallon of Mag once the other two have been depleted.
Thanks Mates

I only add MAG when I test weekly and need it. I also add it to my make up water when doing water changes.

Same here. I pretty much test for Mg every week or two and dose it as necessary. I like to keep mine around 1400ppm.

As far as I understand, you don't add the entire gallon of Mg once the Ca and ALK gallons have been used up. You add 2 1/2 cups of the Mg for recipe #1 and 1 1/4 cups for recipe #2, depending on which one you're using.

Re: Re: Dosing Magnesium

You are right, I stand corrected. Its 2.5 cups. Having said that, I guess ity would be ok to dose MG as it requires as oppoesed to all at once.
Thanks

If magnesium is low, there is no reason to not boost it right away. The recipe is a guideline, but if testing suggests something else is necessary for whatever reason, go for it. Just don't boost it more than 50-100 ppm per day to give any impurities in the mix a chance to level out (like ammonia).
