Dosing pump recommendations needed

Hi,

I'm not exactly new to reefing, but recently went on a shopping spree and bought many very nice LPS corals - and suddenly my tank is consuming >3dkH per day! still trying to figure out exactly how much. I will be traveling for work for 3+ weeks in June and I am afraid the tank will crash for sure without dosers, I was fortunately testing daily so I caught alkalinity fall.

I currently have two RSM250 with one Seneye monitor (which cannot control anything). I the next 1-2 years I was thinking of upgrading to Red Sea reefer 525 or bigger, at which point I would buy Apex controller. But look like I need to automate dosing asap and I am rather lost among all the equipment available.

I was reading on a reef chemistry forum, to buy a doser capable of dosing 4 things at once (which Triton also recommends), since soon after starting dosing Alk, you need Ca, Mg etc. I was also thinking about automating water changes. At the moment I do not even have an auto-top off - was just planning to buy one. Or can ATO be somehow combined with a controller/doser for cost saving?

I am looking for help to invest in an equipment that will be useful long term and capable of handling growing needs of my reef. I am not done buying corals and hope to upgrade to a bigger tank in 1-2 years.

Should I just buy a stand-alone doser? if so, which? or start with a controller with dosing pump being its module?

In addition to alk, which is swinging wildly now and I need to automate asap, I want also to automate top off and ideally water changes. I am also considering Triton method an/or dosing, so ideally would like an option to dose up to 4 solutions. What is the price difference between doser with 1 and 4 pumps?

All advice welcome, I was only researching ATO recently, in a panic mode about dosing Alk now. Today I worked from home to monitor alk, but not a viable long-term solution, of course

Or will I just be OK using ATO to dose alk? If so, I would order Tunze osmolator 3155 early next week. I understand that I would always need ATO, irrespective of controlers or dosing systems?

You don't NEED an ATO, but once you get one, you will wonder how you survived without one. There are many good systems out there.
Dosing Alk via topoff can work very well, depending on consumption. It is a simple way to regulate one of the your major tank parameters if you don't need too much. Lots of threads here on that topic. Try this search 'kalk in ato'.

For good, affordable, and bullet proof dosers, I would look no further than the BRS 1.1ml models. Sure, they need a separate timer for each ($15 digital timers from HD/Lowes) but that is a minor thing. The individual timers make adjusting them easy, and the dosers themselves are well built. Mine are over 3 years old now and still going strong.

IMHO, you really only need to use dosers for Calcium and Alkalinity. Magnesium is easily added as needed (I find about every 6-8 weeks I'll need to add some Mg)

Another benefit of individual pumps is that if one should fail it won't affect the other.

jm.02 (and FWIW, I started dosing using a multi-channel doser. When my skimmer overflowed and shorted it out it was a happy day for me.)

Thank you everybody for the replies! Looks like I should be OK for a while just using ATO and dosing kalk (or soda ash) from it. Good point on individually controled pumps, will keep in mind.

I went with a Jebao 4 pump for less than $70. It not a premium peice of equipment but I don't need to dose by hand. If I were you I would get that, and then get something new/better when you upgrade when system requirements change. For me it was safer than loading my ATO with Kalk.

GHL 2.1 is solid, had mine for about 8 months now. Did a lot of research from people who have been in the hobby a while and outside of the Litermeters these seemed to come up as built to last. It was a bit tricky to set up, but the support is awesome and once I got it up and running the app on my iPad is simple. I spent about 2 hours one night emailing back and forth with the Sales manager of the US and we got mine going. I have the 3 pump one, but believe there is one with 4 as well.

What are disadvantages of dosing kalk from ATO? less precision and shorter life of ATO pump?

I heard a lot of people use GHL or Bubble Magus, thanks for recommendation. How long warranty your have? I saw some people complaining that Bubble Magus T01 tended to break around 13th month, just after warranty ended

The price of Jebao indeed is very tempting, will look into this one, too. Thanks.
