Doug's 300DD Starphire Reef Build

Great work Doug! The illumination looks great. Have you measured the PAR of these?
Thanks Juan. No I haven't got a par reading on these. I would be interested what the two fixtures I have would read. I am running these led's as supplimental. My primary lighting is my 250 watt radiums.

All oak. The door panels are made from 4 1/2" stock and then clued together. I get all wood from Yukon door and hardwood a local supplier.

Got the woodwork on the doors for stand and canopy done except for knobs and polyurethane. Doors are magnnetized for easy access. I don't like the doors getting in the way.

Looks really good! We are going to have to trade some more frags so
I can see the LEDs mounted and the doors on!

Thanks Pat. Come on by anytime I am home recovery from surgery so not going anywhere. Be glad to trade again. How is the 500 efflo and purple monster doing?

They are doing just fine. Sitting on the frag rack until I decide on where to put them for good. How are yours doing? How was the surgery? Everything clear up?

The frags are doing great. You have some nice coral. Surgery went good slow progress. Need to post some coral pics when I get time.

Well, I am caught up with your build, impressive and I really like that sump, I do have a few questions about a few things. You said earlier in your build that people were having problems with stock tank OF boxes, return flow. What did you ask for, to help with this problem and why just one OF box on your tank instead of the commentary two, I am guessing this has something to do with the closed loop. I noticed when you had the tank stand in the garage, your stand had a middle support in the back and front of the stand. When you moved the stand into the house, these supports were missing, then later on in your pics, the supports were back, what was up with that? I noticed that you have your lights mounted to a separate wood top from the rest of the canopy that I am guessing sits into the rest of the canopy top. I have never saw that before, seems like a good idea. You don't have to take the whole canopy off of the tank to work on the lights. I would also like to know a bit more on how your sump is set up, if you could. Also, how tall from the floor to the top of your canopy?

Thank you for your interest and visit. I had the sump built locally by Regal Plastics. The canopy is 60" from floor. As far as the supports in front and back of cabinet they are on and behind trim on front. Must have taken them off during the move in house don't remember back to why. When I had tank custom made I asked for one OF box to handle 2000 gph. I wanted only one OF box mainly so I wouldn't have the dead space in back and I did plan the closed loop with only one OF box. I will have to get more pics of the canopy. The doors all remove and the front canopy door swings up and the top can hinge up so as to be able to get to lighting. Futher back in the thread you can see that the skimmer and chiller and pumps are in closet. Also in closet the secondary sump drops of of primary sump under tank. I will have to get some additional pics to futher show the flow from sump.

hi, what brand are your leds, thanks.
Reef Brite 48" So far very pleased with them.http://premiumaquatics.com/aquatic-supplies/RB-PM48-B.html

Correct. That is the easiest way!!

Good question. Before the trim was placed on cabinet stained I used drop cloth to stain the cabinet. So as you can see no mess on carpet!!

I see.. I was wondering you could get the stain all the way to the bottom of the stand without messing up the carpet (even with a drop cloth). But, I'm guessing there was a little bit that didn't get stained, but we don't see it because trim is covering it.. Is that so?

Sorry for the late reply back here. I have been out of pocket for awhile with surgery and still recovering. After attaching the trim which was lifted about 1/8" I placed a 1/8" ply for finish staining. It was easily done.

Hey Doug, great tank, and awesome stand! I look forward to seeing more of the tank in future photos.

Respectfully,
Kevin
