Dow Flack No Good Read!!!

look at the chem forum on the top there is a sticky from holmesfarley about it, the bromides have been in there regular ice products since 2005 so every one has been using it with the bromides, he says that it should be ok if you prefrom water changes.

What i was told was the date was Dec, of 2006.
Im guessing if that is true that they had a years stock pile. He also told me that if it has the 77%-80% on the bag that it was from older stock piles. When they stopped removing the bromides they changed the % to 83% or somewhere around there. I forget exaclty what he told me. I just knew that what I had gotten he was telling me that it came from when they did remove it.

humm interesting on the report i had read it was back in 05 they stoped, but they must have had some stockpiled.

His exact words " Anything sold after dec 2006 was higher in bromides due to them stopping the removal of them"
Now when they actually stop may very well have been 2005. But he talked as if he was well informed about the subject so I am going to use my bag. Jerry and I got both ours from the same pallet any since then ive not seen any problems nor Jerry so we shall see.

After reading through this it appears to me that the food grade calcium chloride purification process changed in Dec 2006. but the commercial grade changed in Dec 2005 as originally scheduled.

No one seems to know the effects of excess bromide in an aquarium nor the rate at which it depletes which makes the potential for buildup with heavy use a concern.

160 ppm and goes to 7000 ppm. I dont know about anyone else but I wont use it. IMO its far to big a risk.

On a happier note I did happen to find a date on my bag purchased in late 2006 and is 11/19/04. Id say check the dates. If I even thought for a second that my bag was at 7000ppm instead of 160pmm Id use it on my driveway.
With a 2004 date I feel pretty safe.

Thanks for the links..Makes me feel a little better. There is enough in the bag to last me years.

The 2 Bags ui just bought a few weeks ago have the same date on them 11/19/04 Is this the manufacture date? Where is the Lot number on the bags anyone know? I can get a bounch of these bags if it is the GOOD stuff. I would like to stock up cause who know if were gonna be able to find any anymore.

Guys, the stuff from two-part is the food grade calcium chloride, which should be fine. I know its much more expensive than the dow-flake ice melt, but... If we could find someone that sells the dow Food Grade Anhydrous 94-97% Calcium Chloride Pelletsâ"žÂ¢ http://www.dow.com/calcium/product/index.htm we might be able to get a discount. We'd probably have to buy a pallet. Maybe we could convince an LFS to buy and distribute it?? Through UNIVAR, there are distributors in buffalo, johnstown, and harrisburg, PA.

since our product was brought up , i thought id share a link : )
