Down in Flames!!

In Memoriam
This is the second time I lost a flame angel. I have a 55g, and keeping sps, bb, tank parameters are fine. I kept him for a few weeks np, then suddenly he shows up dead as crab food. I kept watching him, he seemed fine, healthy no ich, not signs of sickness. I did however notice hat since I got him, I never really saw him eat any of the foods I put in the tank. Hikari Angel food, Ora Glow, Reef Prime, Green reef flakes, blue zoo food, cyclo, rotifers(didnt expect him to eat those) etc... I am just astounded, I have lost two and can keep other fish and tangs np.

I love these fish, but never able to keep them healthy, they always seem so timid and shy that they don't eat properly or maybe Iam missing what they eat. Now I know angels in general eat sponges, and tunicates and the like. Any good angel foos suggestions? or tips on keeping flames?

same thing happened to me, never could get him to eat. did you see him eat at the store? thats what i did when i got the one i have now. make sure its eating before you buy, and if you dont have the food there feeding him, buy some and gradually get him eating whatever you normally feed. mine eats like a pig. everything flake, frozen, nori anything i put in. i think you just got unlucky, make sure its eating, if its not, dont buy it!!

Starting to feel like an IDGIT for real! I bought him offline so never got to see him munching on anything. Ihave a scribbled and he is doing just fine so far. I am feeding like 2 or 3 times daily, and mixing up food so we shall see. Next time I wont buy until I see them feeding in person.

I had bad luck with angels and lost a few for the same reason. Now I make sure they're fat, bold and eating well. Any angel that's hiding, refusing food or only picking at the rockwork gets left in the store.

Ditch: Sorry for your loss. I'm wondering, you say you are keeping a scribbled angel also. Isn't it a problem to keep two angel fish in the same tank? Did the two go at one another at all? The reason I ask is I currently have a Coral Beauty very laid back, healthy and happy living with a Midas Blenny and a Maroon Clown now, and would like to add a Flame, but all the online fish stores warn against having two pygmy angels together.
I see warnings like this:

Does anyone know if these two fish will get along in a 47 gal tank, so perhaps I too wonââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t find a dead flame in my tank.

yes

yes

Two pygmy angels are bad news I had that exact same combo before, of angels in my tank. It's one of the contributing factors to the Flame's problem. It was a poor husbandry practice on my part. Now for my Scribbled its not part of the same genus. from what I read a large angel and a pygmy aren't as combatitive or prone to agression as two pygmys. I also never saw them fight at all, not even a chase scene. They swam close together never bothering one another so I know it wasn't agression. It was the fact that this flame never ate anything prepared. I tried several (like 10 or more types of food) all to no avail, then he just died.

As an aside:
My Scirbbled actually eats from the nori clip with my purple tang

flame + coral beauty

flame + coral beauty

I had an established coral beauty in my 215g reef, and when I added a flame angel the coral beauty harassed it to death, preventing it from eating. The next time I got a slightly bigger flame and put my coral beauty in the refugium overnight until the flame ate its first meal and got lay of the land. When I put the cb back, the flame harassed it mildly, but never persisted. The cb eventually started nipping corals and clams, so yesterday, after 6 months together, I moved the cb to my son's FOWLR tank. I'd sure like to get another angel, but I'm afraid any dwarf wouldn't have much of a chance.

Maybe is Feng Shui. I mean I had 6 fish, and now I have 5, they say that odd numbers are better then even, and that if a fish dies in your tank, it basically recieved the bad karma heading your way, so consider it a good thing. You dodged a bullet. I just feel awful my flame died, he was beautiful, not that the scribbled isnt gorgeous but somethign about a flame angels personality is very admirable.

Flames used to be hardy..Many are lost due to poor catching/ shipping/ handling ..Its kinda the 'quantity not quality' thing since they have become so popular. Flames from Hawaii are best, but have a high price tag..But its worth it , at least it will live;)
I do love them too..I lost one a year ago and replaced it with a pair of Argi's. I am switching my 46 reef to a 75gallon and I want to get another

A Flame and Scribbled can be in the same tank, if its a large tank..They are different genus. But the new Angel will be harassed and if it is weak or ill, may not survive. Good luck if you try another!

Thanks for the kind words. I am not sure if this flame was Christmas island or Hawaii he was very brightly colored, almost neon, with a great personality, but a little shy and timid and just did not eat well. My scribbled has been eating all day long, munching on the nori clip with my purple tang.

Two pygmy angels are bad news
I have to disagree, it depends on the tank and the personalities of the individual fish. I have three angels in my 65g and they get along very well, no fighting whatsoever. I added the flagfin first, then the flame, then the CB.

ACB: Your tank looks very well established with the Coraline growing on the powerhead and all. How old was your tank when you put these Dwarf Angels together? Maybe a well seasoned tank is what made the difference.
