Drilling 120?? Clueless.

Hi fellow Denver area reefers!

I'm in the process of setting up a 120 gallon reef. Its not drilled but niether is my current 37 tall. I DIYed an overflow and it was really inexpensive they way I did it. Although not the most attractive, it does a great job and is pretty hidden anyway. I'm sure I could make another for my 120 by just making it a larger scale to accomidate the increased flow volume. But I would like to stream-line at least the return from the 1000gph pump in the sump.

What are the advatages of drilling it?
What would I need?
How do I know if the glass is tempered (got it used)?

Hi,

I'm guessing the bottom of a 120G would be tempered. Do you know what brand of tank it is? If so, the manufacturer would be able to tell you.

Thanks. Good video. I bought it used but I'm pretty sure its an AGA.

I think I saw a video on youtube showing how to tell if glass was tempered or not.

If I remember right, it had to do with looking thru the glass and seeing green..

I've heard that you can use two polarized lenses to tell if the pane is tempered. Personally, I wouldn't trust any method. I'd try to contact the manufacturer. Most of the time, the sides and back will be untempered and the bottom tempered but again, that's not a good way to tell. If it is an AGA, they will be able to tell you with no problems.

Thanks guys. Well, I found the AGA sticker so I called them and the bottom is tempered but the sides are not. I guess that means I can drill if I want. Now to the research as to what I want to do. Thank God for Reef Central!
