Ron,
I remember reading that, but, I also remember tat that chart has changed over time. That one is a snap shot of tanks bought and manufactured today/this year. Be carefull with older tanks. Also that chart says tempered bottom. But the sides must be ok to drill right? That's what we thought when we drilled scooters 55 he donated to Dan. I still have glass in my rafters in the basement. That's the ONLY tank I ever broke. I'm proud to say it didn't go to the street, but is pictured above as I turned it into a fuge in my filter. Turns out, it was 50/50 an all glass tank or a perfecto tank. both started manufacturing tanks cheaper and stronger a few years back by using tempered... There was a great post in the DIY forum about a guy who drained his 55 down 1/2 way and proceded to drill... It was titled Oops, I broke it. I feel so badly, that's why I alway say, I can't drill a 55 for anyone.
I talked to a VERY nice lady from All Glass that informed my that if I was to be doing this, she would feel better if I called and they could ask a few simple questions about the tank, like the year tag on the bottom, and the dems of the tank... and the thickness of the glass, they would be more than happy to tell me if or which pannels could be drilled.
I did this when I drilled my 75 last year in may/june. I thought the whole tank was tempered.... but no. Turns out that only the bottom of this tank is, and the sides were plate. That's my tank, now the new 75E 's are different, or so I've been told. That's why Nellies tank didnt explode and the pannel shatter and fill her basement when she chipped the corner last year.
Yes, I have head some merit to the UV trick, Matter of a fact I havent drilled on since that one that uv'd as tempered. (Course, my 40 breeders are plate, and my 29, and another 75 like the one upstairs, I'll drill anything anyone want's till I try the uv trick, And I think it has to be out side in the sun, not in your basement, no uv rays inside.
Hella, Say the word man... Happy to have you back.
See # above or call Jon, he has it memorized by now...
