i sent him a pm. hope he calls

If its to drill a tank he will!

I saw the thread earlier and sent mike a pm, I got his pm just now. I'd all, but I always endup talking for hours about that stuff with all you guys... And it's late... Stig, Mike, If you wanna call me tomorrow am, I'm at 621 3409. I'm going back to the frag a hole porgram... If you don't have any frags, I'll wait...but drill now frag me later... (I've Always wanted to say that...

I have to remind you of the standard liability clause, I assume no responsibility, and will put the hole where you want it... Jessica wants one, two or I think 3... shes still deciding... I just don't want any hard feelings, I like to be everyones friend.

I always recommend checking with the tank builder via phone about your tank if there's a doubt in your mind... The polarized sunglasses thing works... sometimes.... Polarized sunglasses will show a pattern in tempered glass, that pattern is not there in plate. I just showed that one to Ron.

Here's the back of my new prop tank... I'm going to plumb it this weekend.

<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c205/jmkarcz/IMG_1938.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

It's a upgrade to the upstairs.

And I have a beautiful stand and 30 gallon tank drilled and reef ready...

<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c205/jmkarcz/DCP_6016.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

and all the 40's are drilled...
<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c205/jmkarcz/100_2470.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

not to mention the whole glass filtration system for the upstairs tank...
<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c205/jmkarcz/New27gallonsumpforreef_0053.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

even the 5 gallon skimmer chamber..

HOWEVER, this one is not....

Nice setup, as for drilling tomorrow, i decided to go with a bigger tank and run a 75g long or bigger for the sump, ref, and grow out tank. So ill need to find one first... :)

I think the guy likes to drill glass!

Did you need to increase the glass depth for that large bulk head in the little 5 gal?

Yes, the 5 gal's glass is easy to punch a hole in, but the torque of the bulkhead would blow out the side...

I'm home now, I'll give Mike a call then this afternoon.

Jason,
I picked up a good pair of polarized sunglasses after you told me about that. Now when I'm driving down the road I see all these patterns on car windows like you showed me. Reminds me of that sci-fi movie with Roddy Piper called "They Live".

If you have an All Glass tank and want to know if it is a tempered bottom or not you can check out this page: http://www.all-glass.com/services/index.html and click on "technical information".

Ron,

I remember reading that, but, I also remember tat that chart has changed over time. That one is a snap shot of tanks bought and manufactured today/this year. Be carefull with older tanks. Also that chart says tempered bottom. But the sides must be ok to drill right? That's what we thought when we drilled scooters 55 he donated to Dan. I still have glass in my rafters in the basement. That's the ONLY tank I ever broke. I'm proud to say it didn't go to the street, but is pictured above as I turned it into a fuge in my filter. Turns out, it was 50/50 an all glass tank or a perfecto tank. both started manufacturing tanks cheaper and stronger a few years back by using tempered... There was a great post in the DIY forum about a guy who drained his 55 down 1/2 way and proceded to drill... It was titled Oops, I broke it. I feel so badly, that's why I alway say, I can't drill a 55 for anyone.

I talked to a VERY nice lady from All Glass that informed my that if I was to be doing this, she would feel better if I called and they could ask a few simple questions about the tank, like the year tag on the bottom, and the dems of the tank... and the thickness of the glass, they would be more than happy to tell me if or which pannels could be drilled.

I did this when I drilled my 75 last year in may/june. I thought the whole tank was tempered.... but no. Turns out that only the bottom of this tank is, and the sides were plate. That's my tank, now the new 75E 's are different, or so I've been told. That's why Nellies tank didnt explode and the pannel shatter and fill her basement when she chipped the corner last year.

Yes, I have head some merit to the UV trick, Matter of a fact I havent drilled on since that one that uv'd as tempered. (Course, my 40 breeders are plate, and my 29, and another 75 like the one upstairs, I'll drill anything anyone want's till I try the uv trick, And I think it has to be out side in the sun, not in your basement, no uv rays inside.

Hella, Say the word man... Happy to have you back.

See # above or call Jon, he has it memorized by now...

Oh yeah, I know someone in the club who has a 55 I WOULD drill, but, They'd never go for it. IT's SO OLD, the pilgrims brought it over on the mayflower, :D and it pre-dates tempered glass completly. It's got glass almost 1/2" thick!

J,
In the picture you posted that has the clown in the middle of the picture. Are those white slotted pieces DIY flow diffusers?
They look nice whatever they are.

I also posted the link to the All Glass site just as additional information and totally agree with you that it is best to call the manufacturer prior to drilling. Just wanted to clarify that.

No, but I heard a rumor.

I had an opertunity to speak to Mike this afternoon. Very nice guy, who knows where his towel's at... (Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy Reference) He knows what he wants to do to his tank, and I think now has a bit more insight from someone who has done it. I seem to enjoy the building it phase more than the puting water in it stage...

Mike what ever way you go from our discussions, if you need a hand, let me know, I'd love the chance to help you out... and the price is right...

Not to steal the show, but I promised Mike a pic of my APC UPS...

It says 700 on the front, if memory sereves me, that was for 700 VA or Volt Amps.

Also, the plumbing on the prop tank is done... now I can turn it around.
<a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c205/jmkarcz/IMG_4506_resize.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

and then I leveled it... I love working at a brick ard, there's always a bag of structural mortar laying around...

The pilgrims brought it over lmao.
I know I'm blonde but... why would I rip that tank down to have it drilled?
For one thing I have a H.O.B. sump/filter on there so it's level with the tank and I never have any overflow problems on that one. If I turn off the pumps the siphen doesnt break.
Besides that the tank is so dang old and has some scratches cuz I am blonde and when I moved it I put the back in the front by accident lol.
What I wanna do some day is get a 75 to replace the 55 so I have more bottom space.
Thats the only way I'd tear it down after 23 yrs lol.
You find me a cheap 75 and you can have the 55 and drill away Jason lmao.

The glass on my 150 is like what? 3/4 inch thick lol. It's alot worse.
And NO your not drilling that one either lmao. Prolly wouldnt even be able to get through it.
