Drilling my tank

I will be drilling the end of my tank. I’m drilling the end because I’m planning an island tank later on after finishing our family room and moving down there. Ok so here’s the plan. The final dims for the bulkheads are, 5" in from each side and 5" down from the top of the glass. I'm planning the box to be 10" long, 8" high and 5" deep. The depth is aprox depending on length of the street elbow and length of the bulkhead. I want to be able to remove them if I have to. What do you all think? As always your input and opinions are greatly appreciated.

you may want the bulkheads closer to the top as this determines the water level in the overflow... you want to minimize the waterfall of the overflow for noise reasons.

He can always put a small piece of PVC pipe inside the street elbow to adjust the height. Better low than high IMO.

are you going to put the elbow up or down?? I have mine down, opening under water, as it's quieter (like a durso).

Ya mine will be down also Adam. Thanks for the heads up. Hey how high is it from the top of the elbow to the opening. I'm trying to figure the height of the box so I can order the glass..

I have 90's on my bulkheads, and the water level is usually at about the top... IE the 90 is over 3/4 submersed, and that is where the water level is:
you can kindof see what I mean in this pic: although I cut me measurments really close and had to shave the 90's

Ok so how far down are your bulkheads from the very top of your glass?? not the top rim but the glass

This should to the trick

This should to the trick

Bought this yesterday to ensue a strait hole. I’m going to remove the springs tho to allow the bit to float so I do not have to use more pressure than I have to to keep it cutting. I’m figuring the weight of the drill should be enough to keep it cutting.

Oh...

Well that's a horse of a different color then :D

Dave, I would have to agree with Adam, you may want the bulkheads closer to the top.

Sorry for being so long winded guys it's just that i know i have one shot and i just don't want to screw it up. So 2 1/2" to the top edge of the hole it is. that means the overflow box needs to be aprox 5" to 6" deep yes.
