Drip acclimating an anemone

OK. So I got a green BTA. I had no idea how beautiful it was till I put it under my lights. Beautiful green with pink tips. Its in a bag floating in my tank as we speak. I'm going to drip acclimate it. How many drips per second are we talking and for how long? When I'm done do I net it in or what?

I usually drip with one drop per second, for at least an hour. I wouldn't net it as tentacles could get caught in the net. If you have gloves handy, put some on and take it out of the bag by hand.

And you must post pictures, you know. It's a requirement. ;)

One more quick question. Should I turn off my powerheads to let him settle or just let him loose?

Turn off the ph's permanently if you don't have the intakes covered, 'nem vs. ph = dead 'nem. That said, it couldn't hurt to have them off for a little while and let it find a rock to attach to as long as you have good flow in the tank w/o them. Once it settles on a place to live, you don't want ph's pointing directly at it or it will probably move.

Thanks Sonja. I will turn them off. I have mjmods in the back corner away from any LR. Someone on an earlier thread told me that would be OK, but I may cover them just to be safe.

They absolutely do need to be covered. Especially now with the 'nem just being placed in the tank, it may move a *lot* before picking a spot, but even after that please leave them covered. It's a very small precaution to take for such a beautiful animal's safety.

I would not turn the powerheads off. If you do it will just take longer for the nem to settle in. He is going to pick a spot based upon lighting and flow....so keep the flow going. I would try to pick a spot for him and gently hold him there to see if he will attach.

Oh...and as RedSonja said. It's always a good idea to cover the ph intakes.

OK, I got it in the tank now. Its tips blew up a little bit. It seemed to like where he was at first, but ended up working its way down a crevice till it fell down into a cave. I can still see it. It fell upside-down. It appears to be righting itself. Can these things right themselves? My coral-banded shrimp is picking at it now. Should I do something?

That's actually fine. BTA's tend to attach their foot inside of a cave and then stretch upward from there. I think you're off to a good start. Don't worry about the shrimp. The nem can take care of himself.

Thanks AquaKnight. Great thread. Hate how it just ended all of a sudden though. So how is yours doing now? It seemed pretty happy in the last picture. So you go to UCF...I go to and work at USM. Your football team is better than your record suggests. I guess I will ride this out too. He is still getting bigger and has good color. Post a pic of yours if you get a chance.

Yea, I'm still kinda waiting it out too, I got him last Sat from the LFS. It looks like he's wanting to start coming out of the back of the rocks now, not peaking through the front. I guess as long as its fed, he's content.

Football's been tough, 2 season ago, bowl bound, this season 4-8 :( . We're getting an on-campus stadium for the 07 season, so that should be a real team morale boost. How do you like USM? Are you from the area?

yes, ph are deadly and anemones are smarter about suicide than any animal on earth in my opinion. I though I had my ph super proofed but my anemone had the last laugh as it became soup when I was on a weekend trip to boston. Seriously, I had that hagen so surrounded by that needlepoint mesh stuff that the anemone had to have pre-shreded itself before going though. Then thing was wrapped 3 times and over 2 inches from the intake! Goodluck with the anemone!

Clemson University here, started 7-1 and ranked 10th in the nation then went 9-7. Even the bowl was depressing not to mention the USC game. (*&%#!&^%) But hey, everyone is welcome to visit deathvalley!

Definitely getting the mesh tommorow. Have mesh bag that you're supposed to put phosban in over them right now. Yea, I love USM. I'm from MS coast. I'm currently working on my Master's in coastal sciences. alot of fun. I really think we deserved to lose that game against you. We played really bad and yall played really well. We just got lucky. Looking forward to next year.

OK. Just holding up my side of the bargain. I covered my intakes last night. I used charcoal colored fiberglass window screening. $5 for a whole spool. Here you go.

And another to give you an idea of its size (pardon the algae..I'm working on it)
