Animal Planet Adds Drs. Foster and Smith's Faithful Friends to Sunday Morning Lineup
Family-Friendly, Fun Variety Show Features Helpful Tips
BONSALL, CA (4/03/08) --
Animal Planet has added the entertaining pet education variety show Drs. Foster and Smith's Faithful Friends to its Sunday morning lineup. The lively 30-minute program -- designed to engage viewers while entertaining them -- will premiere on Animal Planet at 9am Eastern/Pacific on April 13 and continue for 13 weeks.
Faithful Friends contains celebrity interviews, questions from everyday pet parents, an Ask the Vet segment, and an Itty Biddy Buddy feature focusing on smaller household pets. Some of the celebrities slated to appear with their pets include: Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman, ESPN's Stuart Scott, Dateline anchor Stone Phillips, Martha Stewart pet guru Marc Marrone, and Cameron Mathison of Dancing with the Stars. Some celebrities also give voice to colorful cartoon characters that help the program move from one segment to the next.
"In many homes, pets are valued members of the family, and pet owners are very concerned about providing their animals a happy, healthful, long life," said Tony Loiacono, the show's creator and executive producer. "So we created an engaging television series that not only features celebrities that dearly love animals, but also provides helpful answers to common pet concerns."
The host of Faithful Friends is horse enthusiast Wanda Goldberg, wife of actor and pro wrestling superstar Bill Goldberg. With warm enthusiasm, Wanda guides viewers through the program's informative segments and hands-on demonstrations that focus on the health, nutrition and wellbeing of pets. Wanda, a self-admitted tomboy with a soft spot for animals, is a former model from Saskatchewan, Canada, and a certified blacksmith. She has worked in the entertainment industry for several years as a stylist, choreographer, and later as a stunt woman specializing in being bucked off horses, dragged by horses, racing teams of horses, and swimming horses through rivers. She could most recently be seen hosting Doctors Foster and Smith pet education segments on NBC's nationally syndicated In the Loop with iVillage program.
When it comes to dependable, useful tips for pet owners, Faithful Friends will showcase animal experts from several fields. The featured veterinarians, however, will be the very experienced Dr. Race Foster and Dr. Marty Smith, founders of Doctors Foster and Smith -- the largest cataloger and online pet product company now celebrating 25 years of service. Known for empowering pet owners with extensive veterinary advice and proprietary information at DrsFosterSmith.com and PetEducation.com, the doctors have become the nation's foremost authorities on pet care and education, earning an unmatched reputation for the scope of their expertise.
"Over the years, Dr. Foster and I have amassed a wealth of veterinarian knowledge on numerous animals," Dr. Smith said. "Additionally, there are many experts at Doctors Foster and Smith who we draw qualified information from, and pass that knowledge on to viewers. This is something we've been doing online for years, and we're excited to be able to duplicate that service for a television audience."
Itty Biddy Buddy segments in each episode of Faithful Friends feature young animal lover Electra Mustaine. Nine-year-old Electra, daughter of musician Dave Mustaine of Metallica and Megadeth fame, is no stranger to the camera as she has been featured in a music video and print ads. More importantly, Electra cares for several pets of her own, including: dogs, cats, horses and chickens. In her segments, Electra focuses on the needs of smaller pets such as rabbits, gerbils, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds and more. She brings both charm and a child's point of view to these endearing segments while discussing the unique needs of smaller animals.
Show topics include: caring for new pets, traveling with animals, bird tips, grooming advice, suggestions for helping older pets, spaying and neutering, nutrition, training, horse care recommendations, aquarium guidance, and more. The 13-episode rundown is as follows:
Episode 1: New Pets, Expert-Victoria Schade

Gordon Magee, Internet Marketing manager at Doctors Foster and Smith, said it was early in 2007 when the company began to consider involving itself with a pet care TV program. As the idea was developed, it became evident that this was a logical way for Doctors Foster and Smith to help pet owners.
"Providing the best possible veterinary advice has always been at the very core of Doctors Foster and Smith," Magee said. "That goal is something the company prides itself on. We are constantly looking for new ways to educate pet parents, and it didn't take a lot of discussion to realize that a fun, lighthearted program filled with useful information was a logical step in our mission. Making sure we look after the best interest of animals is what grew Doctors Foster and Smith and it's what we know will make for a quality, entertaining show for pet owners."
