drummereef's 180g in-wall build

So, crvz recommended using 3M's Super 33+ electrical tape. I can say this was a very wise move. After using cheap tape in the past I won't ever use anything else. This stuff is great!

Yeah, in college I managed a mobile audio/video shop, so I've used my share of crappy tape. That 3M stuff is great. A bit more expensive, but it's such a pleasure to use I think it's easily worth it. Seems like things went very well, glad I was able to help!

Ditto. Which fixtures have you guys been looking at, or are you gonna DIY?

I'm looking at doing a DIY LED setup mounted directly onto the light rack (similar light rack that Brett just finished). Cree LEDs with meanwell drivers using the aluminum tube for the heat sink. I've got most everything I need to pull it off, except for time. ;) I'll make sure to document it (unless it's a colossal failure, in which case I'll deny I ever even thought of it).

I'll be watching closely. How much $$ per strip do you think you'll save by doing it yourself?

Bought the split flex tubing I need to finish tidying up the wiring. McMaster-Carr is awesome. :)

What's my baseline? I don't know of any commerical LED strip products that will dim or how many I'd need. I imagine something exists, but I've never really looked into it. I just wanted to play with DIY LEDs, so I wasnt in the "cost savings" jurisdiction when buying the stuff for it.

5 bucks. I wasn't aware you were going to make dimmable LED's so that makes it even better. I'd just like to know for reference how much each one costs along the way as you put them together. Cool project!!! :)

great build!! given me some great ideas for my future build (ie the quick connects on the light mounts Awesome idea)

you truly are a craftsman =D or you just have amazing set of tools =D

Mounting the panels for the RO/DI and Ballasts today. I'll update with pics when I'm done. :)

I see there is this gap above the tank & before the header. How do you plan to fill this/trim it?

Thanks,

You had to post the ugly picture of the basement didn't you. JK. I plan on trimming out the front of the tank with a wide picture frame molding. I have an idea of a really distressed dark stained wood. It will probably be about a 6" wide molding.

Here's a better pic just so I don't have to look at that old ugly pic. Can't believe the basement used to look like that. :hammer:

This is the most complete and detailed build thread I have ever seen. I'm sure it will remain a tremendous resource for years to come.

But my REAL reason for posting is to say (chant) the following:

Waaa-Ter! Waaa-Ter! Waaa-Ter!

 Thanks bro. I'm getting really close to filling it up!

UPDATE:

As promised, new pics of the RO/DI and Electrical panels. :) Both panels are 1/2" sanded ply laminated with FRP.

Here's the electrical panel. The DC8 and DC4HD will be mounted just to the right of where the ballasts are mounted. The conduit run will terminate somewhere just below this panel and the wires will fan out to the DC8. The DC4HD will accommodate the power to the ballasts. I ran out of time but hoping to get the split flex installed tonight.

Just to show in relation to the tank where the water system is located. It's in the back left corner of the room.
