I am setting up a new tank and am looking to buy sand and live and dry seem to be the same price. Am i looking at the wrong stuff? Why would you not just use all live if the cost is the same

I understand that but since it comes with that shouldn't it cost more or am i thinking about this wrong

The live is simply wet. Guess they could ask for more $ but folks would just go with the dry and add bacteria another way.

Equal volumes of wet and dry sand would not weigh the same; the wet sand would weigh more because it has more mass, the mass of the water in-between the sand and the mass of the sand itself. The dry sand has only the mass of the sand and the air between the grains of sand. All the stores are selling the sand by weight and not by volume. Buying dry you get more sand.

Many of us prefer dry sand, as often live comes w/ dieoff, and usually does cost more.
I prefer dry and a scoop of sand from an established tank to seed it if that is available, which usually for me is either from one of my own tanks or I saved some from top layer during a swap, but a very trusted reefer neighbor may be an option.
