DSB bucket filtration

I was going to post this in the advanced topics but it wouldn't post so i'll do it here. For all those who run these i need some help.

Would this work;
mag 3 pump , pumps water from sump into 5 gallon bucket (full of sand) bucket drains back into sump?

Or should i re do my plumbing and run my drains first into the DSB bucket then have that drip directly into the sump?

Also would play sand from HD or Lowes be okay even though i've read about silica based sand causing algae problems?
Anyone want to share pictures of diagrams of how they plumbed theirs? thanks

you want low flow and you want the bucket after a filter so no chucks get in there. mine is after my skimmer and filter sock

low flow? i thought you wanted a lot of flow to keep anything from settling.

You do, but you also want it prefiltered. Drain from tank would have nasties from main tank, so I'd do it from a pump in sump.
