DSB in Overflow

Anyone here have a DSB in thier overflow box? ive heard good things in several threads about using this typically unused space for that. I have mine covered at the top to prevent light from entering so i dont know if that has a negative effect on the DSB.

I've never heard of that being done, but it does sound interesting. The light being cut off shouldn't matter since the sand doesn't need light and the bacteria that makes a DSB work is anaerobic so it doesn't need light either. The one thing that I would be concerned with is if you needed to do something with your plumbing it would be a big headache with all of the sand in there. Hopefully someone who has done it will chime in (I have an AGA with 2 mega-flows, there is a lot of space in there for something like this).

Yeah, the plumbing would be the worst issue. You'd be limited to only being able to remove the whole sandbed before fixing any possible bulkhead issues, or upgrading plumbing in the future.

You could fix that by placing a larger pipe around the overflow pipe. Basically if your overflow pipe is a 1", like most, then get a 2" or 2.5" piece of pvc and silicone it to the bottom glass around the bulkhead (allowing for a small gap between edge of bulkhead and pipe). Then you can slide your standard 1" pipe down into the bulkhead via the center of the larger pipe. You've basically made a small dam to hold back the sand.

I like the sound of having a bigger pipe around the smaller and i also liked the idea in this thread http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=969713
of having a pipe that perforated running thu the sand to feed the bed carbon or sulfur. but all in all it sounds like a real good idea to me.
