I have about 6-8" DSB in the refugium, no plenum, just sand and macro. (plus pods, bristle worms, brittle stars, amphipods, copepods, etc... )
I also have about 1-2" in the display for looks.

I currently have about 2-3 inches in my display and am setting up a 110 gal sump and 20 gal fuge in my basement. I will probably put 4-5 inches in the sump and 2-3 inches in the fuge. Does this sound like a good plan??
There are many guys who only run a remote DSB in a bucket for denitrification so if you are worried about having enough of a DSB to keep nitrates down then have no fear. You can get by with no sand in your display if you have a DSB in your fuge.
I would not put any sand in the sump as this is where most people run their skimmers and return pumps and you never want to run sand through your pumps if you can avoid it.
Keep in mind this is only MY personal feelings and there are many people in these forums who would tell you that you shouldn't have ANY sand in your system. It is all up to your take on the matter and what you are willing to live with and also what you feel looks nice.
