DSPS tank from Thailand (1000 gallon+)

Sorry I never measure PAR's in my tank.
How deep is your tank and what light are you using?
 
Ching. My tank is 98x36x42D top of water to top of sand + 9" to top of hood. I'm interested in leds, however I'm just starting to educate myself on them. I'm following RC thread on DIY--LED's lot of info. Anyway once again we appreciate your work and effort in sharing your beautiful aquarium with us

I don't think LED is workable for your deep tank.
However, it would be great if we can see your build thread.

No thread, sorry. I had my tank built with 1" acrylic by the same guy that built my 300gal that let loose on me after about 20yrs. What a mess! I have mainly fish w/LR. From what I have read leds with optics would work for my tank depth. I'm still investigating. I'm trying to get away from the heat / chiller issues. ps. what time is it in Bangkok now?

That is interesting about leds with optics.

yes, we are getting 350 PAR at 30" water depth. We will be getting some 100 watt single light source LED this week from Orphek to try out. I will test PAR in our 6' deep reservoirs and let you know. They are also working on a 300 watt single chip.
 
Been following RC's DIY LEDs The Write-Up. Lot of info. very interesting! From what I have read so far leds will work. Optics will concentrate the light deeper in the tank. The part I'm still trying to understand is how deep to try pushing the par? In other words pushing a par of say 300 at bottom of the tank will the par be to intense at mid to top of the tank, or try for 300 mid tank and whatever hits bottom will be for softies anyway. I think you can get the par you are looking for with the right combo of leds and optics. the part I'm still struggling with is the concept of putting to much par at bottom then having to much par mid to top of tank that would be overkill for the corals. What is the best solution? shoot for a par mid tank suitable for sps and the rest are whatever they are? Maybe I just answered my own question? Anyway after my rambling any input / thoughts are appreciated. Bond

I think you're on the right tack in shooting for the right PAR in the middle of the tank. I have the MaxSpect unit, and I think the 30 watt LED's with the right optics might work. They have 15 watt LED's also. They are multi-chip LED's and not the single chips that Mr Wilson is speaking of. Those must be pretty powerful and I'm very interested to hear what he has to say about them after he gets them. The only problem with the 15watt and 30 watt LED's paired with optics is the price. You have a pretty big tank, and to get good light coverage, you would need to buy a lot. I'm sure you've looked at all those LED canons, like the Ecoxotic, I'm not sure if those would work, but again those are pretty pricey. If the initial cost isn't too big of a problem for you (you'll quickly make up for those costs with the big savings you'll get in power consumption, the cost of a chiller and the huge amonut of power they consume, and buying replacement bulbs), I think there are a few decent options for you, but I would definitely wait to hear what Mr Wilson says about the powerful single chip LED's he's getting soon, because I know what a 30watt multi-chip can do, so a 100watt single chip must be dangerously intense, in a good way (I only mean dangerous to your eyes, don't look directly into a 100watt single chip, let alone a 300watt single. It might rip your retina, seriously, I don't know for sure, but it might. I only know what a 30watt multi-chip is like and that is bad enough.). I follow Mr Wilson's thread so I'm really looking forward to what he has to say and seeing what what these single-chip LED's can do.

I kind of feel like I'm committing a sin by going off topic in your thread, because to me, this thread, and your tank, is pretty much sacred. Your tank is beyond incredible and this thread only reaffirms that.
 
Canes- Thanks for your thoughts. I checked on Mr. Wilson's Orphek's, but I did not see where they sell just leds and optics seems like total fixtures. I'll be watching for posts. But you are absolutely right ! This thread is about Mr. Ching's one of a kind work of art.
