I realized that I haven't posted an update in a while. I'll try to post some pictures this weekend.
Outside of routine maintenance, not much has been happening with the display tanks for the last 90 days or so.
Negatives:
A couple of weeks ago, I did lose my two barred rabbitfish (Siganus virgatus) unexpectedly. He was about 4.5", I received him in early September 2013, and he had been QT'd for 8 weeks before being introduced to my DT. When I introduced him to my DT, in 24-48 hours he proceeded to eliminate all the hair and bubble algae. He was eating a high quality vegetable based pellet (Hikari Seaweed Extreme) and was clearly very well fed. I came home from an overnight business trip, and found him dead on the sand. Now that he's gone, I have had some reoccurance of algae, so I'll be replacing him soon.
Interesting story about the Rabbitfish - I originally ordered a Scribbled Rabbitfish (Siganus doliatus) from blue zoo aquatics. Instead, I received a two barred rabbitfish (Siganus virgatus) instead, although didn't realize it until a couple of months later. Not really a big deal, and nothing I could do about it after the fact.
I am also having some trouble with a pump on one of my Skimz 251 skimmers. I own two (2) of these, each one running on one of my DT's. The 251 has two (2) needle wheel pumps each, and one of them decided to cr@p out a few weeks after the warranty expired. The vendor (AquaCave) wasn't helpful with a resolution (even considering I bought two of these at $750 a pop), so I guess I'm stuck buying a replacement for $200.00
Positives:
Coral growth has been amazing. I am very pleased with my ReefBreeders LED's and am happy I made the switch.
The other thing I worked on over the holidays was a restructure of my QT system. When I first set up both tanks, I was adding 5-8 fish every couple of months as they cycled out of quarantine. So I had three (3) 40 G breeders plumbed to a common sump.
That pace has slowed now that both tanks are mostly fully stocked, and I've converted two (2) of the QT tanks to frag tanks, and the other is reserved for breeding. I may try my hand at brotulids or Kaurdern cardinals. I had some luck breeding dwarf seahorses back in the early '80's, and may try to recreate that experience.
I now just have one (1) 40 breeder as my QT.
I will post pictures this weekend.
