most of the time I see a fish with one eye popped out...This time around I have one in my qt with BOTH eyes poppin' !

Does this- in anyones opinion- indicate something other than a kidney infection?

fish stopped eating the moment the eyes popped and just listlessly glides around occasionally bumping into things...spends time at the top of the water sticking its mouth out of the water....never seen this behavior before..

any thoughts?

Have you tested for nitrate and ammonia. I had this problem in my QT due to spikes in nitrate and ammonia. After I moved the fish to the DT, the popped eyes healed itself.

By normal range, do you mean 0ppm? There really isn't a safe range when you're talking about ammonia and SW fish. Also, you can forget about nitrite, in SW it's not a concern like it is with freshwater fish, it's only really useful as an indication of the cycle moving along.

How long has the QT been set up? Are you certain it's established? Did the fish get popeye when you put it in, or was it the result of fighting or poor water in another tank?

If water chemistry is off, a partial water change should be done, especially if the bio-filter is only a few days old. After that, mix some antibiotics in with some food and spot feed the fish. With a good dose of antibiotics and nice clean water, the fish should start to turnaround. You can stop spot feeding the fish when it can actually see it's food again.

This sound like Ichthyophonus (Ichthyosporidium hoferi), i a fungus very dangerous. You must treat your fish sooner like possible:
You can put fenoxetol al 1% 10-20 cm3/liter (3,8 liter=1 galon) and wet the food in this product. After 3 days stop and change some water.
The fungus come with sea raw food.

qt is well established..water in prior tank was poor quality...I'm sure that led to whatever it is...but ich hoferi ???? hmmm....have to think about that one...

From:

http://www.aquariumconnection.com/saltsol/disease_desc.html

"Ichthyophonus: Ichthyosporidium hoferi is the most common member of a group of fungi infecting fish. External signs of infestation include emaciation, swelling of the abdomen, flaking fins, skin damage and abnormal swimming. These parasites can invade any organ, especially the liver, kidneys and intestines eventually leading to disruption of normal organ function. This contagious disease appears on the skin as white, necrotic nodules. Once skin involvement is noted, the disease is in advanced stages."

I'm not sure I would go out and start treating for that ailment just yet.....

Plain old broad spectrum antibiotics in the food right now coupled with some nice clean water is really your best bet. Popeye is typically caused by an injury or ammonia burn, by simply ensuring top notch water quality where the fish is now, it may just go away on it's own. I suggested the antibiotics because most always a sick fish will end up with a secondary bacterial infection.

HotTuna,

Well, it appears that my attempts to get you my diagnostic key for fish eye health problems is going to be thwarted at every turn by the RC mods.

The only other option is for your to post a photograph of the fish, and I'll run it through the key myself. Fromt your description, it is unlikely that the fish is suffering from osmotic problems, that should cause edema everywhere, not just the eyes (but a picture would help!) I will say though, that these symptoms are very serious, and with the time that has transpired, the prognosis is poor.

Sorry, my hands are tied....I really did want to follow-through on what will be my last fish disease case here on Reef Central.

YIKES Jay...I'm REALLY sorry to hear of this. I actually started popping into this particular forum to read some of your posts, but I guess there's no longer a reason to do so.

It sure seems like there are more things to worry about than a link to an article or another site when it all comes down to helping out a fellow aquarist...

"what will be my last fish disease case here on Reef Central."

This will be a GREAT loss to this forum if true...Jay... sad to hear that..

I dont know if I have time to snap a pic...but I have already come to grips with the fact that this beauty is on its way out....
I appreciate all the input from everyone on here so far.....thanks !

IMPO, what it comes down to is Jay appears to be unwilling to "help a fellow aquarist" unless he's able to do some self-promotion at the same time. It's appropriate to be a little miffed at the situation, just make sure it's directed in the right place.

How many more "last posts on Reef Central" will you be making?
