Dumb Auto topoff question

OK,

This is probably a dumb question, but I'll ask.

I want to add a topoff system to my tank. If the fresh water container is above my sump, how do I keep all the fresh water from siphoning into my sump after the first time the pump is activated by the float switch?

Make sure the hose from the pump is not submersed in your sump & make sure the hose is above the water level in the top off reservoir.

The splashing can be minimized by not having too much gap between the end of the hose & water level in the sump.

If you are keeping the res. above the tank you will need to go with the option that jetman proposed, because there is no other way to keep it from siphoning through your pump without the valve.

What about this?

Wow, actually thats a pretty good idea. I'll have to keep that in mind, using the PVC as almost a chute... simple nice. The selonoids do have their issues, they can get stuck in the open position, then again so can the float switch. selonoids can be cheaper thena pump sometimes...

I'm using an ATO with a second float switch as a backup. However, even if they both fail, I only have about 2 days worth of top-off water in the container because of space constraints under my stands.

Some day I'll have to post pictures of the plumbing under my stand. I know it's only a 20L with a 10g sump (soon to be added a 2.5G top-off tank on top of the 10), but it gets pretty complicated under there.
