dumb test kit question

I have a dumb test kit question about the API kits. I use the API kits for a couple readings, and the more crucial readings i use the Elos kits. But my question is for the API kits. For anyone that uses the API kits. When you compare the color in the vial to the color chart how do you do it? Do you place the vial up against the white part of the color chart? Or do you hold the vial a couple inches off of the white part of the color chart?

The reason i ask, if i place the vial against the card, or if i hold it away it will match at 2 different readings. I just want to know which is the correct way and the correct reading.

My API instructions say to hold it right against the white side of the color cards ,,,,,, not away from the card ,,,,,
