Duncan Question

On an interesting side not I found a giant duncan nudi the other day that looked like 3 adult polyps!

Here are a couple pictures. My LFS sold them as Duncans and when I do a google image search, they do appear to be what I see in the images. I've had majano anemones before and these aren't them. I've also had aipstasia, and these aren't them either. Like I said, they were sold as duncans but apparently I was "you know what." I had one head on a plug. There are now 4.

Best thing I can suggest is touch them. If they are Duncans they will have a skeleton. If it ain't a Duncan it will shrivel up into a blob like thingy with no skeleton. Like mentioned before Duncans are LPS so they don't move, can't move.

I hope for your sake they are Duncans, especially if you paid Duncan prices. How much did the 4 polyps run you?

Hard to tell from your pics. The head looks right, hard to tell about the base. Hope you didn't get taken. Maybe this would help? This is what mine look like

And this is what they look like when eating...

Good luck

Thats one of those thing syou walk back into the store and say WTH. You know they found them on a rock, didnt know what they were looking at and sold them as duncans. they didnt buy them from their wholesaler as duncans.

I would deffinately go back to that store and speak with a Manager or Owner. I can't believe that they would do that but I bet your not the first person they have swindled there.

Remember when asking for you money back or store credit be polite and professional. Like the saying goes "you get more with sugar than with ____."

will16 - it's hard to tell from your pick - mine looks very similar. However, there is definitely no skeletal base. I can literally watch these things move up rock work. If they can do that, then they clearly aren't duncans. I didn't want to take anymore chances. 4 heads from one in less than a month. I kalked the crap out of them today. I took the one head that I had alone on a plug and I put that in my FOWLR tank to see what happens.

I bought a 7 head duncan and it was doing great for about 3 weeks; however, over the last 3 days they are closed up and no polyp extension. Has anybody ever experienced this with their duncans? All water parameters are good and I haven't noticed anything picking at it, nor is there any other coral in the near vicinity. I do have it place in a hole in a rock. Is this fine or do they have to be placed on the substrate/DSB? Any ideas? here is a pic of what they used to look like:

I'm at a loss here. I did what some of you guys here did. A really good friend gave me two heads and it's been like...3 months, now there's 6+ heads. Hardy, beautiful...but why are they so expensive? He just told me that on average these go for about $25/head. I looked around and sure enough the average price is about that.

I'm really curious as to why they're so expensive.

There are many different type of duncans. I have two that look exactly the same as giants4pc's duncans but they are glued to plugs, they do not have a calcium skeleton (yet) and they are definitely duncans, just not the Australian version. I would suppose that is they were not attached they could move. And as for the comment that LPS do not move, that is 100% incorrect. There are several LPS corals that can move (Fungia, HelioFungia, Slipper Coral, etc)

1. giants4pc no i have never heard of any LPS moving around like an anemone

Plate corals can do this.

Since this thread was already open and the coral I am having a problem with is a Duncan I figured I would post. I got an ORA Duncan 4 weeks ago and it will not open up for nothing lately. It was opening really good for the first 2 weeks but for the last 2 weeks one day it is open the next it looks like it is going to die. It's now been 4 days and it hasen't opened one bit night or day. Maybe someone can offer some advise. Water parameters are good all other corals are doing great with good growth including SPS and all other LPS. The Duncan is the only coral not opening. I have moved it to 3 different places waiting about 4 days to see whether it will open then I try another location. I don't see anything bothering it but is there a chance that there is something bothering it I can't see? Should I dip it or will that just stress it out further? If I should dip it what do you guys suggest?

If you saw my post a few up from yours, I am also having the same issue. Today would have been the fourth day in a row where they would be totally closed, but I came home and they were all open. I think yours may do the same. I also thought I would mention that I only paid 5$ a head for mine and I have 7 heads. I bought from a local guy who also has his own online shop. Some people got duncans with more than 7 heads, $35 was the total price no matter how many heads. He gets direct from Australia and he had green, yellow, and purple ones. He still might have some more, but if your not in San Diego, you would obviously pay shipping. FragCityCorals.com

I didn't see a comment that said NO lps move. This thread is referring to duncans being lps and that they(duncans) do not move. So far as we know, duncans only come from australian waters, and ALL are lps. There are a few different color morphs out there, but all are from australian waters that I am aware of. They all have a skeletal base also. If they were fragged really close to the polyp and glued to a disk/plug, it may look like they have no stalk, but it is just due to the way they were fragged. Also, if a frag is grown in lower flow, it will be more of a cluster than branching, but will still have a skeletal base under the flesh.

As far as duncans closing up, I have a frag that periodically does that. When I first introduced it to the tank, it stayed closed for more than a month. It now is opened more than closed, but still closes up for a week once in awhile. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it looks healthy other than not being open.
