duncan question

My duncan seems inflated all the time. Is this bad? i see pictures of duncans allover with really thin, pointy tentacles compared to mine. If i happen to bump my duncans, and they try to close up, they cant. I actually tested this by picking up the rock they are attached to and shaking it a bit. They go in a little bit and then stop with the tentacles still mostly out and they're all balooned up like a bta. They're nothing like when i bought them, in form. colors have remaind the same. They eat plenty and are growing a bunch of new heads. heres a pic.

I'm not overly concerned i'm just wondering why they always look different?

i think there's actually more than one type of duncan out there. what do you mean they can't close up? They can't suck themselves back into their stalk, if that's what you're thinking (at least mine can't). Mine can roll up into little bulbs, but that's about it.

It looks like a healthy duncan to me. It prolly is'nt closing up all the way cuz it's happy and you did'nt stress it enough (don't stress it anymore to see lol).

kass

yes, they cant suck themselves into thier stalk like when i first got them. the heads were flat across when i first buy them. Now they cant even come close to that. the colony they came from looked different, too. short, sharp looking tentacles. mine are long with rounded tips. could it just be different conditions? higher nutrient levels perhaps? more flow? more light?

mine look the same as yours. and i have noticed that when the daylights are on everything in my tank gets inflated and when the atinics come on they go down a bit

If they get fed well then the polyps get so fat and healthy that they can't suck themselves back in. I used to get 300 polyp colonies in the polyps are very broad and thin at first until you feed them good. Imagine feeding 300 polyps lol. Plus they probably don't get as much food in the wild as you give them.

right... they do eat a little bit once a day just from me feeding the tank and about once every week or two i'll spot feed 'em a whole bunch of food. so yeah, they eat well.

man i cant even imagine a 300 head colony! that must be really impressive! how can that get moved or shipped like that?!? i guess those branches must be pretty damn strong. i remeber the guy fragged it with a dremel i thought that was pretty cool.

They are just happy and feel no need to close (not stressed). I have several colonies that do the same thing but as soon as I take them out of the water and frag them they stay closed for a day or 2. IMO these are one of the Hardiest corals I have ever owned. I have had them get stung by Acans and still 1/4" piece will live and grow into a full polyp.

Hi Skeptic_07,

A 300 polyp colony is only about 15"x15". The polyps are just closer together. The branches are pretty thick. Shipping from Australia to the East coast is pretty expensive. It takes up it's own box. LOL At the end it's well worth it. Feeding it is a nightmare. Well I guess it's not that bad since i have a unlimited supply of mysis since we own a store. A 300 Polyp colony will down half a pack of 3.5 Oz mysis every other day.

Wow, that alot of food...

I never target feed any coral in my system. My Duncans have add about 1-2 heads a month, maybe that's slow growth...

Happy Reefing

woah.. thats alot of food! mine gets a tiny cube of SF bay food when i feed it. They seem happy with it. maybe i should start feeding the baby heads too.

Yeah LOL that is a lot of food. But i'm feeding 300 polyp colonies. A lot of work too. I have slowed down now and only target feed them 2 times a week and on the other days i feed Coral Frenzy......
