Durasa blowing smoke- Cloudy water

Hi, my 75 SPS reef is going through a ruff stage. I have some bleaching going on with some very old/mature colonies. I am realeating it to my expirmenting with new halides bulbs (going from 10ks to 20ks then back to 10ks).

When I got home from work today my giant durasa is blowing smoke in the aquarium. He is open as normal. Is this a stress sign or some kind of sexual thing?

Thanks for the help.

Andrew

It is both a sexual thing and a stress thing (likely). Most giant clams when stressed will release sperm/eggs into the water.

As long as its mantle if fully expanded and not gaping, I would not worry too much and just keep an eye on it.

Good luck!

I would do a large water change...your clam is spawning and it is not certain but usually thought to be caused by stress. Things can degrade quickly in our small glass boxes. Run carbon and change the water.

I agree that this is reproductive act. the light change that you did -triggered somthing in ur clam. you should feel lucky too experience this. however this can foul ur water fast. 10 to 25% water change now+carbon . keep an eye out your clam may not be done. Injoy:) .

Yep, your clam is playing with itself.....lol. In all seriousness, I recently had a horrible experience with my tanks losing power due to a GFCI and a faulty pump. When everything got going after the temporary blackout, all 10 clams in my system spawned within a few minutes, sending a HUGE cloud into the tank. B/c of tremendous fish death previous to the spawning event, I was already doing a 50% water change, and another 50%, and another that evening.

I've had a couple clams spawn before, one right before it died.....
It had been shaded out progressively more and more by a larger clam for about a month and a half just before it died. I was unhappy to say the least.
