Durso standpipes... external?

Got tubes?
Hi all!

Part of my Christmas break plans for my tank include silencing and just generally overhauling my plumbing.

I was wondering if any of you guys used Durso standpipes? Specifically, externally on a horizontal overflow?

The main reason I ask is because someone a while back recommended doing an external one. Pretty much, the "street ell" would connect directly to my bulkhead on the back and the rest of the standpipe would be behind my tank instead of in an overflow. :)

I can't see right off a reason for this not to work. What do you all think? Have any of you done it?

Thanks!

Brandon

I'm running an external durso on my 29gal, and it works like a charm! I went extremely simple and just connected a 1.5" PVC T-union directly to my bulkhead. Then I used a threaded plug in the top (no hole drilled at first). I started up my pumps, let the tank run for a little bit, then progressively started drilling a larger and larger hole in the plug until it went silent.

I highly recommend it if you have the room behind your tank.

Very cool... thanks for that link, jeweldamsel!

Zucker26: I have more than enough room behind my tank... its kind of caddy-cornered. :)

Very good... this is what I shall do!

Thanks for the replies!
