As long as you properly construct it. I tried to use a smaller PVC T and street Ell and still had that sucking/gurgling noise. My overflow already had a 1" standpipe that was several inches long. My original attempt used a smaller 3/4" T that inserted into the standpipe. The new version uses a larger T, street L and plug that fit over the standpipe instead of into it. This also raised the overall height of the the T so that the plugged end is approx level with the water in the tank. I drilled a tiny hole in the plug and now it works great and is so quiet.
