Dustins Cube

I couldnt imagine a 400 watter in a closed canopy....I dont think it would be good;)

Boofer,
I ran 3 of them for over 3 years on my 220gal....needless to say my 3/4 hp chiller ran a good bit. I now use 1 most of the time and only run the other 2 for 2 hours in the middle of the cycle.

My chiller never runs in the winter now and a lot less in the summer.

Ill eventually get something better, but this thing has tapped me out what would you put on it? Its roughly 130 gals.

If you have ~$500 to spend I would put a good(MRC, Barr aquatics or PM) 32-34" tall 6" diameter becket with a good pressure rated 55 class pump on it.

If you have ~ $700 to spend I would use a dual pump Geo needlewheel.

For $550 Geo also sells a nice single pump, skimmer that would probably work well.

If you have ~ $1500 to spend I would get a dual pump Deltec or H and S.

In other words I would get a good becket or a Geo needlewheel:)

JMO and as you can tell I like to overskim(it helps when you like to keep a lot of fish). I'm sure there are some other good options out there.

Thx Igor, Youll have to come back once its all done;)

Dave- :p

Kevin-Yeah, me w/o a chiller Id be worried. I still havnt seen what the light is going to do to the tank heat wise. Open top though, it shouldnt be a problem. Ive just never run 400's, so the heat is kinda intimidating.

Chris- I dont have anything else to spend at the moment, so I hope the 2 will do for a little bit. Ill look into those mentioned:) Im wanting to go with a fairly high fish load in this tank.

I didnt have alot of time, but I took a few quick pictures...

I got the sump up and running Saturday morning. It should have been Fri, but I had a major leak on one of my drain BH's. Seems when the tank was placed it was wedged up against the center brace a little and lost its seal. Sadly, it was full when I realized it. Luckily, it didnt break anything. The overflow is a 1/2" off center, so the center brace is in the way of the right drain. I had to drain it all down and remove the rock, move it over a 1/4" and retighten the BH...then refill it. Sucked big ones...

Heres the sump area...

Im using a GenX PCX-40 as the return pump(behind the 10gal). Its going to a SQWD, which is plumbed over the top in the corners to a 90 and a small piece of pipe pointing straight down. the 10gal tank to the right is my auto top-off, which is actually plumbed to the 29gal at the moment. Im only running the one skimmer on the tank for now, but it should be fine for a couple weeks. Im also running a little carbon in the filter sock off of one of the drains. The sump can actually hold about 5 more gals of water (give or take), but I didnt have time to make any more. Im not planning on using baffles in the sump. Ive always been able to keep the micro-bubbles in check. This tank shouldnt be any diffrent. Ill run a magnum canister filter for carbon and such once the level is higher.

Heres the rock Ive been "cooking" for 7 months. I just put the rock in randomly, so I still need to aquascape. The Starboard I really wasnt sure I would like, but it came with the tank, so Ill see if it grows on me. Its really not that bad. You cant really tell, but the light is amplified greatly by it. I imagine the corals will show better colors on the bottom branches, at least till it covers with corraline...

This is a side shot of the back plumbing. If you look at the inside of the tank youll see why I wanted the returns going straight down in the back. The starboard doesnt cover past the overflow, so I need the flow pushing out whatever accumulates in the back. I thought about getting some pieces cut to fit, but with Starboard floating like it does, Im not sure if I could keep it down.

Heres a non lighted shot of the 29gal thats holding all my corals.. The AC was off Sat and today, so the tank was at 90 tonight. I didnt think it would get that hot, so I didnt have it on. Sadly, Ill probably lose some stuff, but hopefully not...Its always something...
IMG_1681.jpg

Ill let the tank sit like it is for 2 weeks. I still have some loose ends to complete on the tank like the fans, a shelf inside the stand, aquascaping, and some other things. I will get on those when I have the chance.

looks good dustin, i went BB yesterday too. im gonna keep a close eye on it and if i cant handle it ill throw a SSB back in. ill post pics later. the setup looks awesome. btw my tank hit 90 before i had fans all day while i was at work before, now it peaks at 83.5. still high but i cant afford a chiller :(. to my surprise nothing shows any signs of stress. luck of the draw i guess. keep us updated, it looks great!<~~steve

Looks great Dustin:)

Are you going to run a sock all the time? I noticed nutrients went up when I did FWIW.

Chris

Steve-From what I hear, it doesnt look like Ive lost much, if anything. Ill have to see what the damage is.

Chris-I put that on temporarily, basically just to run a cup of carbon. The tank seemed kinda hazy to me. I only used it before when I blew the detritus around with the Seio. Id let it run over night usually, sometimes a few nights if I had to blow out the dead spots more than once. I figured it would cause issues if kept in eventually, but Ive never run long term. Good to know its an issue:)

From all this I see that Dustin IS someone you want to do your plumbing but NOT someone you want to take to the track.

Master Dustin,

We all are in awl of your tank. The holes are round, the pipes are clean with no glue drips and your water is clear.

Just one question where are the fish? Did you leave them all with the Nashville Zoo?

Just messin Looks Good

Hey Dustin,

Did you get what you needed when you got home? Well good. So when are you coming back to Nashville. We have a pool to build. We need help that only Master Dustin can provide.
Ya'll help, Great. See you Wednesday 7:00 am with coffee.

Well, Im finally getting around to posting some progress...been busy lately...

A few things have changed...
I broke the 29 down and put everything in the new tank.
I put about 20lbs of Marshall rock in.
I added Penductors and Loc-line to the return pump returns. (The original way wasnt working out. I needed a bit more flow and the OM was pushing the detritus to the back anyway.)
I added snail guards to the 1" BH returns and increased the return pump intake, in the sump, from 3/4" to 1". (It was a definite increase in flow. Im going to increase the CL intake to 2" from the BH. It should add the extra flow Im wanting from the OM CL.)
Added a ASM G3 along with the ER 5-3 to the tank.
And also put the tank on a doser that is dosing both A & B 24/7...Its set to dose Alk on even hours and CA on Odd. 120 ml a day of each and alk is a steady 9.5 and Ca around 420.
Heres a few pics of the aquascape Ive settled with. Ive changed it multiple times:D

A little size reference....Im wanting the smallest fish I can get..

"cooking" didnt work out as expected. as Im seeing multiple macros and Valonia popping up on the Florida rock. Mainly Hair algae on the Hi-rocks base rock. Granted, It wasnt shedding till I added the Marshall.
Temp has been getting to 83, so the chiller is on its way....updates to co

Thx Chris:), Its got a long way to go still. Those pics make it look very empty, but theres 20 SPS frags and 7 Softies in there. The tank/light just swallows them up:D, plus there not all mounted where there going to be. I just broke the 29 gal down about 2-3 weeks ago, so Im letting them adjust to the 400 before I move them up.

I forgot to mention I added 100 Astria and a few Turbos, Im probably going to have to add about 25 or more Astrias and a couple more Turbos to keep up with this Hi-rocks rock though.
I also added 2 peppermint shrimp for the Hydroids. I dont see them much, but I believe the numbers of Hydroids are going down.

It just amazes me how many Macros survived in 7 months of darkness while being cooked, detritus has been alot easier to take care of so far though. Detritus conveniently goes to the back wall in the space between the Starboard and Overflow or the sump. What doesnt end up there, either flows up the wall to the overflow or gets put back in suspension. The Loc-line on the returns is valved down low to push the current gently towards the overflow up top, so that helps. Once I get this water closet done, small weekly siphoning/water changes will be easier also.
