Dwarf Golden Moray Eel?

Does any one have any experience with these in a reef tank? Are they excape artists like larger eels? They are supposed to readily accept prepared foods and from what I have found out they are quite docile and secrative.

Any personal experiences are appreciated.

Never had one personally, but all the experiences I've read on here say they're docile (like any other eel, to the extent that their mouths are small and they can't fit many fish in them) and do fine with corals, etc. You may have a problem with them eating inverts, especially ornamental shrimp.

They will not bother cleaner shrimp. Like all eels they do not eat every day and often go on hunger strikes. But they are pretty much reef safe and not aggressive.

Mine has been in my reef for 5 years.
He will not tolerate ANY sandsifting gobie's or Jawfish, he will kill with no mercy!
He does tolerate my Randall's gobie and does not bother anyother fish in my tank.
I have seen him let my two fireshrimp clean him, even the inside of his mouth.
The only thing that he will eat is squid that I cut up in small pieces and have been frozen in a Vita-Chem and Selcon soak.
All in all, I love him in my reef.

Mine is on a strike (going on 3 weeks) now:mad2:

Mine has done great for the last 3 yrs - eats readily about every 3 or 4 days. I have not seen them at any sites recently - One of my favorite inhabitants - has real personality.

How do you secure the tank so he doesn't escape?

I have never had a problem with him trying to jump out, from the get go.
My tank has always been an open top.

The two I have will pick off anything they can fit in their mouths, and then some. Added a scarlet shrimp one evening, next morning it was very visible in the eels body, and the shrimp was larger then the eel. Pretty secretive, but will poke their heads out to see what's going on, and will swim around the tank when I add Rod's food. I would recommend a secure top because I have had them go carpet surfing in the past, it's not worth the risk.

My experience with them as well....(Not reef safe unless you have larger fish). Mine has eaten expensive smaller fish twice now. They are hunters and you need to be aware of the risks.

Mine will eat:
steamers split open and left near his cave
frozen silversides fed with tongs
Yashi Gobies
Picasso Clown

Great to here to here the long term success of keeping these eels. Five years you deserve a congrats erendon. I have a contact that has 5-6" Dwrafs at around 150-175 if your interested. Regards, Tim

i am getting one from my lfs in a couple weeks i can't wait. they have one now, but its full grown and i want a juvi so they r getting one in with their next shipment. They r the coolest eels out there IMO. i'll be sure to post pic when i get it.

myerst2, u have someone getting them for that price?? Thats really cheap. Is the contact local. For that price I might have to get another one and pair them up.

Here's my dwarf. I've had him for about 6 months and has grown well. i got him from my buddy in Hawaii who has a few of them for sale. They are so passive. I love these guys. The first two shots of when I first got him and the later are from about a week ago. Regards, Tim

Bin there, done that Tim. I bought one and he went nuts. He did not rest till he killed it.
Knowing this I would not risk the money to get another, but thanks.

How big do these get? Would they be happy in a 60gal tank?

They only get to about 12". They should be fine in a 60 gal because they are not active swimming fish.

I'll assume that a dwarf moray wouldnt mess with my tangs but i have a 3" fat false perc and a 3" fat mandarin goby.

Do you think i would have to worry about them getting eaten by a juvi dwarf moray?

The dwarf shouldnt bother the tangs, perc or mandarin
