Fish Crazy
well i'v had my fuzzy dwarf lionfish for about 3 weeks now and he is eating but not very consistant it had crassed my mind that my LFS selld small freshwater feeder guppies and considering he only goes after the stuff that move and stays moving has go me wondering what is everone input on this. is it safe to feed him freshwater food or is it very unstable?

Our dwarf wouldn't eat anything but guppies and ghost shrimp for first 3 weeks but now is eating anything. Little harder to acclimate. I was nervous about the guppies too but I think the risk is low. Also try using big pieces of flake or frozen that will float around and get his attention. I usually distract my other fish and then put larger pieces around him. He stalks it and then strikes. I love my dwarf!!!!!!!!

Freshwater feeder fish are generally not a good food for saltwater fish. I have a fu manchu dwarf lion that I just got to eat frozen foods. Start with ghost shrimp (i was forced to use freshwater, but obviously saltwater acclimated would be better) and get him eating that well. Next try some different fresh/frozen foods....krill, market shrimp, squid, silversides, etc. Lions can go a while without eating, so it may be a good idea to starve him for a week or so. You should only feed them a few times a week anyway.

hey, hows your dwarf??? I never had mine go skinny and I didn't feed him for about 5 days one week. Is he eating. Did you get him some guppies or ghost shrimp? Just wanted to check in.

he eats one very small piece of krill or silverside every 2-3 days i't got me worried i might pick up some guppies just out of sheer sorrow for the little guy just to get him to eat something. ooh and what exactly are ghost shrimp?

Ghost shrimp are usually found in fresh water dept of your lfs. Make sure they are clear befor giving to your dwarf. If they are at all white do not give as that means shell has hardened and could get stuck in throat. I have always given my fish(Flame Hawk, Geenbird and even my Marroon) ghost shrimp. Been doing for years. Have you tried live brine? Google Ghost Shrimp and you will learn more. I like giving them a few times a month. Mine will stalk and then have a stare down before striking.
