Dwayne's SPS Elos Tank from Canada

I agree, some of those pieces look really odd. Beautiful corals though! Maybe its an imbalance in calcium or strontium maybe? Won't low strontium levels make corals brittle and odd looking?

I'm not sure what is causing the odd growth. I do frag often and the pieces bounce back very well, so they are healthy. The tissue looks inflated sometimes, particularly after a greasy Mysis feeding. I have cut back on my feeding altogether, increased my WC schedule and have cut back on all additives to see if things return to "normal"
Overall my colour and growth is good so I'm not too worried yet

Have discontinued
Biogest products
Polls extra

These problems and the STN of several pieces all started when my DA RKE failed completely, causing temp fluctuations and alk spoke to to slowed down growth from inconsistent lighting schedule as I waited for replacement parts.

Looks like I'm back to stable though and all STN has stopped. Just keeping my hands out and waiting

Thanks for your comments

Hey

Hey

Dwayne, did you recently bump your Mag too fast? Your SPS look like they have 'bubbling' skin. I had that happen to me a few times and it was magnesium that was the culprit.

Interesting.....I have seen pics of people that have had this happen and didnt know why.

What we are seeing are signs that the calcite polymorph of CaCO3 are being favored over the aragonite polymorph due to an imbalance between magnesium and calcium.

I did not test last night but I do have my results from April 10th
I just save them in my phone when I remember to do it

Phos .03 Hanna
Alk 9.3 Backed doser off a bit to get into the 8's again Salifert
Calc 410 Salifert
Mg 1400 Salifert

The Alk and Ca kits are new, the Mg about 6 months old

Did my reg 25g WC last night and had a small Milli frag RTN overnight.

Grabbed a half dozen assorted frags from around it and dipped them in Lugols/Prazipro (my recipe for killing pests) and saw nothing come off so I still do not believe it is pests.

Just going to let things be for now and see what happens.

Possible causes/things I have changed
Controller failure - temp fluctuations 77-80, lighting schedule off track, ALK spike to 9.8 with changes to lighting and growth, changed Carbon as usual with WC. Took 2 weeks holidays.

The last one is likely the problem. It never pays to leave home as your tank always seems to suffer.

One last thing it may be but I do not think so. My sump/wc/frag tank is all in the basement on a steel stand. It is rusting badly and there is a likely hood of small bits flaking off and going into the sump. I have a new frag tank and new stand already on order, should be here in two weeks. The stand will go out for powder coating this time to avoid this issue. I really do not think this is the problem but going to correct it anyways

Frustrated and confused

This sounds way over my head

Laymans terms please and does anyone have any idea to reverse it?
Is it simply a water chemistry issue?

If my test results show good numbers as I believe it will what is a guy supposed to do ?

PS the pcs that have STN or show base recession are not the ones people have noticed with the odd growth, those one are fine !

I get those once in a while, when ca++ and mg are off. usually when ca++ is too high ! so not sure.

some of the pieces show a bit of tip burn could be due to KH.

usually mine just grow on top of the abnormality once I resolve the ISsue, which is usually done by a larger water change and adjusting the dosers.

I wouldnt worry about it too much and just get the parameters in line :)

Sounds like a good place to start !

I have been very, very busy lately and just have not had much time to dedicate to the tank. DA took over a month to get me a replacement head unit so I bought an APEX controller but I am Network challenged so have not been able to get it up and running. Still on the repaired DA for now but all my issues started right after the controller issue

In theory continued WC and more testing should bring things back in line

Just need a little success to get back on track and feeling good about my tank again. Lately it has been more trouble than joy

Dwayne, if you have a couple of spare dollars, get yourself a Doser to setup a perpetual water change system. All you need is a Profilux/Bubble Magus doser and some tubing. Its done marvels for my setup. I can show you how I have it either in person or through email.

The doser removes up to 2L per day of tank water (my Bubble Magus does), and replaces it with fresh saltwater. The part I like the most is that it adds the right amount of trace elements each time. Your levels should be sustained, as long as you don't have a lot of uptake. Your water chemistry will be perfect (based of course on the batch of salt that you use)

Its essentially fluffy, weak skeletal growth as appose to dense, strong skeletal growth. Very common, can be mistaken for burnt tips. Try lowering the mag a bit and bump calcium up a tad and go from there.

Your tank is pure awesomeness, dont sweat the small stuff ;)

This sounds way to complicated to me :)
Ill look into though, might be able to incorporate it when I switch my sump/stand setup

I will keep my eye on everything

Tonights test results are in

ALK 8.5 yippee!
Calcium 490 a little high but ok for me
Mg 1500+ used the whole syringe plus so its high for sure - turned this doser off completely

How do you deal with ato ? Do you have a thread about it I could check ? Sounds pretty interesting.

Dwayne ... Your tank looks great and colors are amazing already ... These little bumps are the fun of the hobby :)

In terms of using ATO, over the course of the day there will be multiple times when the ATO goes on. Each time it pumps the water into the tank, you are looking at 10-50 ml of fresh water (depending on the time of the day). Because it is such a small amount of water, you don't need to worry about its effects on your salinity levels with the PAWCS (Perpetual Auto Water Change System) being integrated.

Because you are exchanging the same amount of water with the PAWCS (pump 20ml out, 20ml in), and the evaporated water by the ATO, you are always going to be close to the equilibrium point.

I have tested my water each month for almost 9 months, and it hasn't moved from the set point of 1.025.

Complicated? LOL!

1x Doser with minimal 2 pumps Bubble Magus Pump
1x 30' of 1/8" tubing

Setup: One pump is setup to draw water from the tank, and displace it into your house drain lines. The other pump is setup to draw water from the salt water reservoir, and pumps it in your tank.

Done and done.

sounds prety good, I guess as soon as you remove 20 ml, ATO will go on, and refill the sump, then you add 20 ml new Salt water, which will raise the water level in the sump. I think dwaynes sump is like mine, where th water level will effect the skimmer.

I guess this would work perfect if there was a separate sump for return and water changes ... still much better than buying an auto water change system :)

if you have time, take some pics and make a thread about it, I am sure many would appreciate it and we dont have to talk about it on Flagswipes thread :)
