Dying Crocea

This one really puzzles me. I purchased two croceas (each about 2.5") a little over three weeks ago, and they were doing fine, up to yesterday evening when I came home to see one of them closed up and this morning it was gaping and all the color in it's mantle was gone. I think it will be a gonner. The other crocea looked o.k. last night, a little less extended with it's mantle, but not anything near to symptoms of a pinched mantle. I will have to see how it looks this evening with the lights on.

When I originally purchased them, I checked for pyramellid snails before placing them in the tank, and I have a sixline wrasse should anything come up, but I dont see anything on their shells.

Only thing I can think of is that we have had some warm weather in the Chicago area these past few days (60 deg) and my condo runs on the warm side even during winter. The tank temp was about 83 degrees. I have a maxima that seems fine though as well as all the sps corals in the aquarium. The only problem I am battling right now is that I have a lot of macroalgae growing, and have some dinoflagellates. Sorry I haven't taken any water parameters yet, other then salinity which is 1.026.

I know it is hard to speculate what it is, but if anyone can give some insight I would appreciate it.

Well to give an update, I lost both croceas last night. Came home to find one already a slurry of decayed flesh which I siphoned out and pitched the empty shell. The other one was gaping as well, so instead of waiting for it to die and rot completely I gave it a funeral as well. The maxima I have is doing fine, as well as all of my sps corals.

This is very stange, one day it's fine, the next they are dead without any signs or symptoms. If anyone has had this happen or know someone else this has happened to, I would like to know.

its hard to say what could have caused it with out knowing more about your tank and it inhabitants, where you got the clams from and the conditions they were held in before you got them.

when clams suddenly die, this is generally how they go. they appear to be fine and look normal and then the next day its too late.

I understand. I will keep an eye on my Maxima for the time being and hope there is not a problem. I beleive that the clams I purchased that died, were not in the dealer tanks for very long, and the maxima I purchased a few months ago was supposedly there for a few weeks. That is definately something I will consider in the future if I decide to purchase some more clams. The sps in my tank all look fine, with healthy polyp expansion from my acros, monti's, etc.

The only thing that I did a little different was to increase my photoperiod from 91/2 hours to about 101/2, but I switched it back to 91/2. Will do my scheduled water change this week, and test the parameters.

I am pretty sure a fish was not the culprit, since all I have in the tank is a sixline wrasse. It was basically that one day they were fine, the next they were dead.
