ebay lights

Iam thinking of buying this 48" pc odyssea light off ebay. its 65wx4 with fans legs and moonlights for 100.00 shipped. It is my plan to get zoos and mushrooms to totally cover all the rocks in my fish focused 55gal. It will also have the added bonus of having cheaper bulb replacements than what I have now. I am fine with only 260 watts, it seems like my best bet for the amount of money. Does anyone want to talk me out of it?

I had a oddysea light once, couldnt stand the loud fans mine had. Sold em to a guy on here and he changed them out with new fans I believe and fixed the problem.

About the bulbs though, I think Gary (gflat) used the PC bulbs in the past and said they was fine? Can't really remember...

for zoo's and mushrooms...i doubt you'll even need that much light.....and you'll probably get the same type of output need from 2X54 t5...at approximately the same price....and less bulbs to change out, and lower electric bill....sorry im a sucker for t5s so i might be a little bias...LOL :)

yea, I've actually got a 48" coralife aqualite with lunar bullbs I'm fixin' to sale. Can't remember if I still have the legs. I do know one of the plugs a bulb plugs into, the plastic cracked, but the bulb still plugs in and works. If you're interested I'll let you have it for $65 since it's probably ready for new bulbs...

I had a 48" Odyssea on my first 60 gallon (a tall 55). It worked fine and I would think you could easily keep 'shrooms and zoas happy with it. My only comment is that PC actinics are notoriously bad, so you won't get the colors to pop on your zooanthids the same way you might get them to with superactinic T5's.

I have about 110w from N.O. strip lights (2) but it is still a little dark for me which is why I was thinking of stepping up to the 260W. Thanks srt80 for the offer I am interested, how many watts is it? does the light comes with built in leds. DMBillies, do you suggest that if I win the item I should get 4x50/50's instead of the 2x12k and the 2xactinics if the actinics are so bad?

The 50/50's are just half 10K (I think) and half actinic... so either way you are getting the same kind of actinic. I would say if it has 2 switches/wires (I can't remember), that you should get the actinic bulbs separate from the daylights so that you can run actinic only before and after your daylights are on... plus it is just fun to look at tanks with actinics only from time to time.

And I didn't mean to imply the PC's were a bad option. As long as you are pretty confident you'll stick with shrooms and zoas I think it will work just fine and you'll still get pretty decent fluorescence out of the actinics. Remembering talking to you, consider these another "cheap mistake" if you don't like them. The only ways I would talk you into another option is if $$$ isn't a concern or if you are fairly confident you'll be upgrading tanks or switching your stocking list to something that requires more light.

Most softies, mushrooms, and zoanthids don't REQUIRE a huge amount of light, but most of them also tolerate higher light and may even grow better in some cases, so I always recommend people go for T5's (or halides) if they know they'll want to keep SPS in the future... it ends up cheaper to not have to upgrade in the long run.

i personaly have had good luck, started out with the 65x4 power compact used for 2 years, now i have the 96x2 pc and 150 x 2 MH had it for almost two years, no complaints

NO HOOD BUT ONE IN THE FUTURE, PROBABLY DISTANT FUTURE. THE RETROFITS FROM REEFGEEK WERE A LTTLE OUT OF MY CURRENT PRICE RANGE, I STILL HAVE TO FIND A SKIMMER!

Thanks a lot john, but SRT80 already hooked me up with a fixture at a great price! Its a pc 65x4! I cant wait (oooohhh but iam gonna wait!) untill the frag swap!
