They do nicely espc in antisynch mode.

Looking at purchasing one of these for my 220 g tank will one do the job and are they really needed?

based off of ur info in ur signiture there. im surprised your even asking this. is it needed? not if you already have flow, i see you have a sump. so you have flow, are they helpful and a bonus, well yea then lol..umm mostly suggest either 1xmp60 if its a 220 SPS tank, or 2xmp40s if its a 220 mixed reef...one will help, but 2 is better for this tank...

Ok thanks guys I've been out of the game for awhile and never built a tank this large before every tank I had i just had a few pumps in the back making the current so these devices are new and unfamiliar to me. Just when you think your done spending and you think you bought everything you realize you need more gotta love the REEFER hobby.

I run two of them in my new 312g tank on the bottom, then on the top i use two 1.5" seaswirls. I get lots of water movement that way

+1 to the mp60, I have one that is going on my 220g all with a wavebox,6205, and a hammerhead closed loop with penductors for flow. Also just for thought 2 mp40s at full blast are equal to one mp60 and from owning one they move some serious water
