Nice Job Ed,

I actually thought of doing that also but with mangrove in my frag tank.

One thing "concerns" me, I'm not sure if it's the picture but these rocks seems to shadows all the corals under it, are you gonna move them or they still receive enough light ?

Keep taking a LOt of picture for us :P

Thanks
Alex B.

Thanks Alex - the 'island is carefully place in order not to shade the corals below.

I will post more pictures later where you can see how the corals are not shaded

I think a frag tank with mangrove will be really cool. Please please share once you get started as I would love to see how it looks...

Very nice Ed.
Can't wait to see it fully grown.
f.

Thanks Felix - yeah me too....I think this tank will look a lot different 1 year down the road :p

That is very creative. I love it. What kind of plant is that? Can they grow in salt water? Where are you going to put the waterfall?

Thank you - it's a dead bonsai plant branch I use. However, the stone I used is very porous and over time green moss and little smaller plants will grow over it.

And sorry, no waterfall at this time :D

I like the idea but the pine tree plant looks way out of place in a tropical reef setting.

Thanks Ricky well, I'm in the tropics

THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE

THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE

Took me a really really long time to find the right type of rocks to used as the type of rocks I'm looking for have to be very porous, light and the overall size must be suitable for my needs as I don't want something too heavy over my overflow and have to be esthetics to the overall look of the whole set-up.

I must've been to around 20-30 plants nurseries to find the right shape/ size rock I wanted and I finally ended up with this piece of rock with just some chisel work and minor drilling at the sides and back of the rock to shape it to my liking"¦

From different angle:

This is how it looks from the top:

This is the section where the dried branch is insert into:

:D

Then the next thing was to find the right branching wood to give this mountain some characteristic. This wasn't so hard as I started looking for dead bonsai trees and finally found a dead bonsai tree in one of the nursery, which I insisted they sell it to me"¦. (they must have think I'm nuts for buying a dead tree). I then cut off part of the branch, which I think can match my little mountain, and dry it out in the sun for a few days.

I then treated the branch so that it won't rot easily"¦. Might add some artificial green leaves on the tips in the future, if I can find the right size"¦

Once all this is done, it's a matter of securing it to the piece of rock.

I then source for some artificial leaves and glue them onto the dried branch.

Next project is to make a custom fiberglass mountain tray to sit the mountain rock "¦.

I will also spray water over the rocks daily to ensure this mountain rock is moist all the time as this type of rocks is very porous and will absorb water like sponge. It will also help in reducing the humidity moisture from the tank wide surface.

The lights above the tank and the moist rock will be great to grow out some plants and green moss on those mountain rocks as it will act as natural sunlight"¦!!

To give the overall set-up the all-natural-look, I added at the base of the mountain with some soil and grow some grass and once those moss and grass starts to takes off, I will remove those artificial leaves....

You can see from my sketches, I was originally thinking of using a live bonsai plants but decided against it in the end as I think I will only kill the plant in a long term as my interest is in the reef so a dead bonsai suit my needs just fine

Who knows, if one day I can find a suitable fiberglass tray, I might convert the upper section of the landscape into a plaudarium? But I guess that's a project for later on"¦.

:rolleye1:

Meanwhile, to place it over my overflow, I firstly place some egg crate over it

The first layer of the egg crate have some hole cut out to create space for my Tunze cables"¦

This is then follow by another 2 pieces of egg crate - you can see from the picture my Tunze light sensor, which will be "˜hidden' amongst the rock work so that it can still be use to reduce flow once the lights are out.

Once this is done, the rockwork is place over it and my Tunze light sensor "“ can you spot it??

Very cool!

Very cool!

Well Ed, you fooled me.

When I saw the first pictures of your island and bonsai pine tree, I thought that was a living tree! I was astounded how it could survive so close to saltwater! Ya got me! :D

Beautiful aquascaping - very creative.

Maybe you could trickle your ATO outflow over the rock to keep it moist... freahwater instead of salt. Just a thought.

OK ED, You are the Man!!! I have been a bit over whelmed with my own build but had to say "I just love the Island LOOK" well done, jr

here is an idea for you

since you plan on having the island rock absorb water and grow natural plant life, but being as its going to be salt water so most likely its going to be some type of algae......how about modifying your island rock into a foutain, something light weight and low flow like this http://www.peacefulwaterfountains.com/members/1616084/uploaded/5k.TT8012-SereneStones.jpg as algae grows along the water path you might be able to add function to the art in the form of an algae turf scrubber.....might take care of your po4 problem in the process

did i confuse the hell out of you? when i reread it i almost confused myself

Thanks LL - you guys are giving me so much ideas my head is spinning

Might need to figure out a way to do that?? Problem is my reservoir is about 3m away from the rock. You think an aqua lifter will be powerful enough to lift water that distant - 2m parallel and 1m upwards?

WOW, that is AWESOME! I can't wait until you start to put some live plants on that "island." :D

i know...I know...now i'm more excited to watch green plants and moss grows over the rocks than my corals growth

No, you didn't confuse me and I know exactly what you mean. Lot's of those false mountain with waterfalls here in China and yeah, if the moss and plants did not take off in 2-3 months, I might just change and get me one of them instant waterfall :eek1:
