the part that sucks is u have no choice in whos ur power company!

im guna move outta state between electriciy, the cost of living, my house payment, the gas for my truck and all the freakin insurances i pay i cant get ahead out here

lets all move outta state then we can all smile and wave back

:D

Me too. I leave in 13 days. New apartment is twice the size contains things we don't have now like dishwasher, 2 car attached garage, ceiling fans, air conditioning, extra bathroom, and patio area. Rent is half what it is here and it include the electric bill.

Solar is so expensive up front though.... it may be worth takin a 2nd or a line of equity out on the house and paying that back slowly over each month then gettin screwed by SO cal Edison

The PUC Tarrifs. Legaleze.

If you don't have a headache already, you will if you read through that thing. Maybe my day has just been too long... Dunno.

My baseline is 17KWH per DAY. NOT the SEVENTY I was being told by the customer service rep (70 - I WISH!). I'm always at tier 4 no matter what, and now they'll be adding a fifth tier!

Not sure if I'm gonna be able to keep this up... This is horrible.

Nicole, you could look at one advantage of getting rid of your tanks - a reduced electric bill.

Even as negative as I may sometimes be, I still firmly believe there is a silver lining to every cloud.

Who'da thought?

just out of curiosity, how much power does an AC suck up?

Not enough information to make even a guess. Depends on the size of the unit, mostly. And there are other factors such as insulation, the amount of degrees of change needed, do the kids run in and out of the house, are the windows open, etc.

Really, there are quite a few variables there. I'd suggest dropping an ammeter on it while it's running (and if you can get a reading on it while it's starting up that would help, too! That's when most of the current draw is, during startup). That would give you a general idea. Figuring on insulation and such probably isn't worth it.

And, oh, you guys wanna see an electric bill? Where I work it's about 3.5 MILLION a month! 5 years ago I think it was less than 2...

oh okay, i was just curious because everyone's bill was so high. I'm not sure what kind of unit we have here... but we try not to use it. I was just trying to get a good idea of what ours might be since we haven't gotten one yet with the new tank setup.

Interesting... okay, you guys had me curious and I really didn't want to work on my project at work anymore, so I pulled my last 3 bills and here are the results.

I recently looked into solar for my house. For about 500KWH setup, after rebates, it would be close to 25K installed. Payback was about 15 years IIRC.

That estimate was done without factoring in rate increases.

There aren't that many absolutes in life, however death, taxes and utility rate increases are three of them.

I'm still mulling it over, and in fact may even DIY (buy the panels, run the wires, voila! It's not brain surgery, after all...).

Time will tell.

Vegas is great this time of year. With 3.5 mil it has to be Vegas????

Nope. Southern California. Fontana area.

Nice try...

ahhh.. this is crazy.. I also just got my SCE bill for my small shop (I don't even run chillers, and only run AC during the day and turn off when i leave) $1656.17! that is more then my gross last week!

*sigh - what to do.. what to do?

wow!!! now i'm really scared! do you run AC in your house at all josh?

No, not really. We keep it at 82 year round. Sometimes it kicks on. But since getting the updated bill we have actually turned the thermostat off. We just can't chance it coming on. Our ceiling fans and windows keep us quite cool.

i'm just worried because we have similiar setups and we don't use the AC at all. Did you order the ARO by any chance? If you want you can come by and take a look at mine to see if you like it.

Okay folks, for those who don't save their bill inserts (or get e-Bills like me) here's the So Cal Edison web site where you can download and view all the recent bill inserts:
http://www.sce.com/AboutSCE/DocumentLibrary/CurrentDocumentLibrary/default.htm

The latest insert show regarding rate increase is July 2006, which is right at the top. It is a notice of FILING for a rate increase of .16%. Not 16%, but point one six -- affect residential customers at the rate of .20%. The notice also provides all the information you need to file comments with the CPUC regarding the increase.

Thanks for providing this Nicole. I cornered my wife and asked to see the statement which mentioned the 55% increase. She admitted she just heard that from a friend. There was no 55% increase. Our usage was double, and that's why our bill went up.

She thinks it because of the chiller.

That's the only new thing in the equation. I'd hate to think a chiller would double our monthly usage though. Ouch!

I want to order it, but my wife is so mad at me right now I don't dare use my credit card. She would castrate me.

She sees the aquarium as the cause of all evil right now. The chiller pumps a ton of heat into the family room and, (according to her), doubles our electricity bill. She also claims I spend more time with the tank than our kids.

Right now we are trying to come up with a way to pay for the electrical bill. You may see a "FS - 120 tank" thread soon ;(.

You'll be fine. The addition of the chiller and the normal use of the AC occassionally must have been the cause of our usage increase. It wasn't a rate increase.

Thanks Yinger :) As I said I have no dinero right now. Thanks for the invite though I grew up in Irvine, 1979-1996. Maybe I can stop by sometime. Life is a little busy right now.

Thanks
JOsh
