Educate me on tuning the noise from my drain

This is my first RR tank, and need some advice tuning the drain tube to stop the sucking and gurgling noises. What is the height it should be at in the overflow? Thanks!

Do you have a ball valve on your return pump? It's probably turning the water over too fast

It's a DC pump so I can dial it down

Is it possible it could be draining to fast as well? It's Deimos to a sump room in basement and DUMPS out of there. I have a ball valve on the drain and could slow that as well, not sure if that is immaterial or not.

If it's gurgling from the overflow it's because to much water is going down. You should have a ball valve on the overflow so you can slow that down and find a balance between the overflow and the return pump that is silent

It appears to be a Durso drain the valve on the drain is not only unnecessary, it could easily lead to overflowing the tank. Remove it. Use the valve on the return (or turn the flow down) to get the gurgling/flushing to stop. Being a Durso the max flow through a single 1" drain is a max of 350gph with 300 being more realistic.

Ok so with drain valve untouched and DC pump almost at its lowest setting I still get a solid gurgle. Where should the height of the drain pipe be set? Here is where I have it now:

I can get it to quiet down by adjusting the drain but the overflow level rises and I can see what you mean about overflowing tank

Took my dorso out and noticed these holes, anyone shed some light on why my drain has these because all the diy ones I see don't. Look at the base of the T you will see 3 good size holes in it.

Betting those are your problem. Totally defeats the purpose of the rest of the durso. Bet it makes way less noise when you replace that piece.

You should just toss it and turn it into a herbie system. Use the 3/4" return as the main siphon and the 1" drain as an emergency. Then put a return over the top of the tank. Here is some good info on how to do this. My understanding is that a proper durso should have a way to adjust the airflow to silence it.

The holes might have been put there to stop the sump from overflowing if the power goes out

Mine has those 3 holes aswell. I have not filled my tank with water yet. Hopefully I don't have the same issue. Which leads me to believe this is the way this durso was intended to be used. Exact holes drilled in the exact location on both of ours. doubt that is just a coincidence.

No this is a "for sale" piece not a diyer for sure so I suspect they are there for a reason but I'll be dammed if I can find any info specifically on this piece. Fortunately it all comes apart and is just 1.25" PVC so I'll try replacing that top T with a normal one and 90 then put a airline and valve in top for adjustment

i have the same kind of stand pipes in mine. sometimes they gurgle, sometimes they don't. i just had them silent for an entire week, running smooth as silk. turned off the water for a water change, and when it came back on, gurgling like mad.

i have dual overflows in my setup, and i think that either the tank is slightly leaning toward that end, throwing more water down than the overflow pipe can handle, or something along those lines.

in my setup the gurgling overflow has my emergency full siphon in it as well, but it's above the water level of the stand pipe. i've been thinking about pulling the other stand pipe out of the other overflow, and swapping it with the emergency pipe, so i would have two of the "curved" overflow pipes in one of my overflows, and my emergency drain and return line in the other overflow.

That durso is what every aqueon overflow kit comes with. They have those holes so if the air hole on top has a snail or something on it it will still break siphon. Water plus air means sound even if you use the valve on the air intake it you may still here it gurgle. Look into herbie and bean animal methods if you really want quiet. They both use full siphon which means no air which means no sound.

Do a Herbie. I have a corner overflow tank and the Durso was driving me nuts. I replumbed the return over the back and used the drilled return hole as one the Herbie holes. It's night and day difference.

You should seriously pull it apart and run a bean animal with three of those holes and then plug the extra hole with a bulkhead and pvc end cap. Youre going to be much happier.

A herbie requires constant attention. If the durso is set up properly then it will not make gurgling sounds constantly or so loud that its the only thing that you hear. The durso is self adjusting and runs well when properly tuned.



For the OP. I would plug all but one of the holes in the return line. You only need one of them as a siphon break if the pumps shuts off and starts a backflow. I would look into getting another pump that has a lower GPH. You are probably running too much water through the system still.
