electric bill

So i noticed my bill went way up after changing my lighting. It may be the hot month but i Run my AC non stop. It went up 165 bucks. I will say that i added 2 room mates in my house to help with mortgage, but i still think the 8 bulb 48 inch t-5 light fixture is to blame for some of it. I do love my new lights though. Keeping any coral i want is pretty solid.

If you are referring to your last bill the whole state's electric bill was crazy. Mine was a ridiculous $530 bucks for a 2100 sq ft home. I only have a 75 and a 40 gallon tank.

Already this month it has dropped by alittle over a hundred bucks. Normally it is about 3-350 this time of year

dzones-roughly the same here. Over $500 per month (every month-even winters) on a 2200 sq ft house. I have a ton of tanks running and no insulation in the attic, so I've got some work ahead of me. I wish I could afford the spray on PU insulation... The idea of having a max temp in the attic of 85 is appealing, not to mention potential energy savings.

Adding two people to a house can really increase electricity demand. That's several more showers a day (water heater, unless you have a gas unit), more cooking, unless you all eat together, and potentially more electrical devices on (if everyone watches their own TV and has their own computer), etc. What did you swap from?

yeah 3 computers now, 4 tvs - one being projection, and all other electronics they use. And i guess 3 people slamming laundry brings it up a bunch as well. It just brings fury.

woo I feel good compared to yourlls electric bills. I have 1 150 halide that I run at least 12 hours a day and a 4 bulb fixture for my orchids that probably gets 8 hours a day. mine vary from about 100-150 my house is tiny though. :)

What kind of light, brand do you have over your orchids? I been looking for one but don't know what to go with yet.

ahhh 850! I feel for you. I use the 4 bulb current fixture. 2 actinics and 2 10k. They have responded really well from the extra light( used to just get light from a south west facing window).

what orchids do you like to grow freed?

on a 1400 ft^2 house, with usually 1 computer on all the time, 4 bulb T-5s on for 8 hours a day and mild AC/heat usage our electric bill is USUALLY $100 but it spiked the last two months to about $150!

I just heard that my area should expect a 10% increase soon... That's $50+ to me. They say the reason is higher fuel charges for doing service calls...

I use sunlight for my orchids;). I've got them outside under an 8' overhang, right outside the window. They can stay out there most of the year down here, though (maybe 2-3 months max inside in the winter). I've got Vanda's (and similar), Phala's (and similar), Dendro's, Epidendrum, Cattlyea (and several Catt hybrids), Angraecum, and Oncidium (and similar). Since moving them outside, I get 2-3X the amount of growth. It's tough keeping them watered in the heat of the summer, though.
