Electrical help please....OT

We are taking our dining room chandalier and matching sconce. The new owners are, obviously, on board with this. However, they do not plan to replace the wall sconce. They said to simply patch over it.

Is it code, or legal to just cap the wires, stuff em back in the box and dry wall over it? There is a switch that controls it obviously. Do I need to do anything with that?

If it becomes more than a drywall repair, I'm not getting into it.

I would remove the wires from the switch to be on the safe side, then stuffing the wires into the wall and drywalling over it would be fine...JMO..

It is not code to bury a live junction box.

Second, you can not hide a junction box. Get a cover and paint it to match or wrap in wallpaper.

OK, thanks. It didn't seem safe. I don't have the know how to start dealing with all that. I'll either leave the sconce, or replace it, but I'm not covering it over.

You can cover the box with and electrical plate. It will probably be the round ones, they screw in like a regular face plate only solid. Cheaper than a new light. The wires must be nutted though.

+1. You want a blank faceplate. It just screws on. Then you've covered yourself as far as safety and legality. The new owner can do what they want with it.
