Electricity cost in San Francisco

There's a good chance my wife and I will be moving to San Francisco in a couple months. We're looking to rent a ~900 sq ft apartment, and I'd like to get an idea of how much utilities would be.

It depends as many apartment communities will pay for the electricity costs as well as many if not most of the utilities.

That's the ticket - having your land lord pay for your utilities. I have in the past rented an apt. where the management payed for the utilities.

I live in SF in a 700 sq ft apt and my PG&E bill is under $40/month. However, I'm usually not at home unless I decide to work from home for the day or if it's a weekend and I choose to stay in to watch football, so I think my bill might be a little less than most.

If my landlord pays for my electrical bill, he would kick me out of the house right after he gets the bill ..

i think you're better off calculating based on the kilowatt/hr rate based on when you plan on running your tank and figuring out how much energy ur tank will be using.

Electricity costs about 11 cents per kilowatt hour here.. for the first tier, if you run any large tank or one with extensive energy needs (MH lamps etc) then you'll most likely go up a tier or two and have that amount being more per KWh.

You're coming from Arizona though, so good thing is air conditioning is no longer a money issue

My SF PGE is $300 plus. If you move to Santa Clara, it's combined with water, garbage under 100.00 I heard it's less down there.

During my search for an apt., I asked if aquariums were ok and that I only had a small 10g fresh water tank. Make that 65g with T5's and MH - OK I lied. But this was a large apt. complex - with 300 units.

Good info! Didn't know that certain complexes paid utilities, I'll look for that.

So, I'm figuring out the PGE Tier system -
T1 $.114 per kWh for up to 100% of Baseline
T2 $.129 for 101-130%
T3 $.229 for 131-200%
T4 $.322 for 201-300%
T5 $.370 for >300%

How is the baseline determined? I don't think my tank has extensive energy needs. 90g with T5 lighting only, no halides, and for flow I'm going to get the Hydor Koralia stream pumps, so that should be efficient.

sfsuphysics, you're soo right about the AC. We don't have tiers, but the power company here charges more per kWh during summer months than winter. My bills this year ranged from about $80 to $300. That's for a 1500sq ft single level house with a pool.

In addition to the 90g I have a cat. Hope places that allow pets aren't too rare.

There are many places that will take cats without a hitch (more so it's usually stated in the advertisement). It's the aquariums that may be a bit more challenging.

Rekonn - Your electricity bill for your tank shouldn't cost too much. We have similarly sized tanks and equipment. The T5 lights help me out a lot because I don't need a chiller and a fan (although I wished I did to get better PAR, but that's another topic). I also don't have AC (not that I really need it since I'm in SF), but I do use the central heating once in a while.

I own a condo with a 120 gal with losts of MHlights in SF. My total monthly bill is about $90 a month. When it was just my 40 gal its was like $30 a month.
