Elegance Coral max size

Just curious but what is the Elegance Coral's maximum size? I've read online it can eventually get 2 feet long?

Does anyone here have an old Elegance Coral which is approaching this size?

:bounce3:

I bought my elegance over 7 years ago when it was the size of a half dollar.

I am about to do my third tank upgrade because of it.......

The skeleton alone is now pushing 8" across, and almost 6"wide, and is shaped like a W. The beast, when it's open, can easily touch both sides of my 24" wide tank. Front to back it's probably 10+ inches, and get about 12" tall. I love/hate it lol.

Give it plenty of room, because it (for me, at least) has won every fight with everything else it has come into contact with. Including my skin LOL.

My Elegance is I think 8 inches long or so when inflated. It's quite wide as well.

My tank isn't that big. It's 24"X12"X24". And your right they are really aggressive. I used to have a LT anemone but had to give it away since it grew too big and got into a fight with my Elegance coral. I was pretty surprised when the Elegance won the tentacle fight and the LT anemone shrank away from it.

What size tank would be best for it long term? I was thinking of using a spare 46 gallon bowfront in my possession as a new tank. Would going bigger be a better idea instead of the 46 gallon bowfront?

Bigger is always better lol. I have a 60ga cube which was great for the last few years, but everything (elegance included) has grown so much it's time to do something different. I'm going with an 80ga, which isn't much of an upgrade in water volume, but the dimensions are totally different (48x24x16). I'm sure in a few years that will be too small too LOL.

I mean it did take mine quite a while to get as large as it has, and I'm sure it will keep getting bigger and bigger. I have been able to frag a few pieces off it to help keep it's size somewhat in check, but I think with my new tank the elegance will have a side all to itself with nothing else around it. It's just killed so many SPS, LPS and even clams, but I don't want to get rid of it either. Mine is indonesian so it's not all that common, and it's so healthy! I have to wear gloves now working in the tank because the last few times it got me, I had a nasty reaction that looked a lot like hives, and it lasted for DAYS.

Going bigger is always a better idea. You may be able to get by with the 46 for quite some time though.

In theory, these corals should be able to outgrow most of our tanks. In the wild, where growth rates are stunted by seasonal changes, and other environmental influences, these corals can reach several feet across. In our tanks, we can eliminate factors that reduce growth rates. We can provide environments with no cloudy days to rob energy from the coral, no rainy season to reduce salinity, all the food the coral can eat, no predators, relatively constant temperatures, no pollution, and I'm sure I'm leaving a few off. Basically, we should be able to do with these animals what we've done with captive tigers. With medical care, great diets, and good living conditions, we've created tigers that live longer, grow larger, and are better athletes than their wild relatives. I see no reason why we can't do this with elegance corals.

With most of the elegance corals I've seen offered for sale in the hobby, their growth rate, or calcium carbonate depositing rate, in the wild was somewhere around 1/4" to 3/4" per year. I've personally obtained growth rates with these corals in captivity of around 1-1/4" per year, and I'm sure that's not their maximum growth rate.

back in the day (and I am dating myself here-1990s) when the elegance was considered the cadillac of corals Brantana Aquatics in Orlando had one in their show tank that was about 3' feet long with a giant tapered base.

See mine a few posts down...it's base is in the shape of a large C, weighs close to 2 pounds...it is really big but because it wrapped around itself, it's hard to get a length, but I'd guess it's at least 12-16" long...
